DIFFERENT TYPES OF

NETWORKS
M a y A n g e l a L . Ta d e o
NETWORK
• a group of
computer systems
and other
computing
hardware devices
that are linked
together through
communication
channels to
facilitate
communication and
resource-sharing
among a wide range
of users.

2
PERSONAL AREA NETWORK
(PAN)
• The smallest and most basic type of
network.

• concerned with the exchange of

information in the vicinity of a person

• typically found in small offices or

residences, and are managed by one
person or organization from a single
device.

3
LOCAL AREA NETWORK
(LAN)
• connects groups of computers and low-voltage devices
together across short distances (within a building or
between a group of two or three buildings in close
proximity to each other) to share information and
resources.

• typically owned, controlled, and managed by a single

person or organization.

4
WIRELESS LOCAL AREA NETWORK
(WLAN)

• Allows devices to connect and communicate

wirelessly, eliminating the need for cables.

• Devices on a WLAN communicate via WiFi.

5
C A M P U S A R EA N E T WO R K
(CAN)
• This network is usually setup for
educational activities such as classroom
updates, practices labs, emails, exams,
notifications, polls, etc.
• Larger than LANs, but smaller than
metropolitan area networks.

6
METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK
(MAN)
• Spans an entire geographic area (typically
a town or city, but sometimes a campus).
• Ownership and maintenance is handled by
either a single person or company (a local
council, a large company, etc.).
• Usually characterized by very high-speed
connections using fibre optical cable or
other digital media.
7
WIDE AREA NETWORK
( WA N )
• Spans a large geographical
area such as across cities,
states, or countries.
• The Internet is the most
basic example of a WAN.
• Most WANs (like the
Internet) are not owned by
any one organization but
rather exist under collective
or distributed ownership
and management.

8
GEOGRAPHICAL AREA
NETWORK
(GAN)

• Same as WAN
network, but it
covers unlimited
geographical
area.
• a computer
network which
connects two or
more WANs.

9
ENTERPRISE PRIVATE
NETWORK
(EPN)
• Built by a business to
interconnect its various
company sites in order to share
computer resources.

10
VIRTUAL PRIVATE
NETWORK
(VPN)
• A service network that lets you
access the web safely and
privately by routing your
connection through a server and
hiding your online actions.
• Prevents unauthorized people
from eavesdropping on the traffic
and allows the user to conduct
work remotely.
