DRAMA

 It is a literary composition that is written either in prose


or in verse.
 DRAMA originated from the Greek word “DRAN” which
means “TO DO”
 It is intended to be performed onstage with live audience.

DRAMATIST/PLAYWRIGHT
 This is the term used for a writer of a play.

THEATER
 The place where the play takes place.

THEATER ARTISTS
 The people involved in the production of a play.
ARISTOTLE
World renowned Greek
philosopher.
He wrote the 6 essential elements
of a drama more than 2,000 years
ago.
His concepts about drama largely
influence the way we view drama
today.
Aristotle’s Six Essential Elements of
Drama
PLOT- refers to the story line of the play.

THEME- pertains to the message that the playwright


wishes to convey through the events and the
characters.

CHARACTERS- refers to the people, or sometimes


animals, portrayed by the actors in the play.

DIALOGUE- the words or lines of the characters that are


meant to be delivered verbally by the actors.
MUSIC/RHYTHM- refers to the rhythm of the
actor’s voices as they speak/the variations in the
manner by which dialogues are delivered.

SPECTACLE- includes anything that can be seen


onstage during the performance of the play.
-It is also called as Visual Elements.

MODERN THEATER IDENTIFIED ADDITIONAL ELEMENTS
1. CONVENTION- refers to the techniques or methods that
dramatists and directors adhere to in creating the way
the play is written and interpreted.
2. GENRE- pertains to the type of play.
-musical - avant-garde
-comedy - historical play
-tragedy
3. AUDIENCE- viewers of the play.
- most stage directors/playwright considered audience
as an important factor in the writing and production of
their plays.
3 MAJOR ELEMENTS OF DRAMA
 LITERARY ELEMENTS
1. SCRIPT- it is the written product of the
playwright. It contains the dialogues, description
and the stage directions.
2. PLOT- refers to the story line or the logical
arrangement of events in the play.
-Plot structure of a drama is very similar to short
story.
- The only difference is that in drama, the plot is
presented in dialogue and stage directions while
short story is written in paragraph form.
PARTS OF DRAMA PLOT
1. EXPOSITION- refers to the initial incidents that introduce
the setting and characters of the play.
-It is also the part where the conflict starts to take place.
2. RISING ACTION- refers to the event after the exposition.
- The tension builds further and the conflict gets more
complicated as the characters struggles to resolve it.
3. CLIMAX- turning point of the story where the greatest
suspense is felt and experienced by the readers or
audience of the play.
4. FALLING ACTION- pertains to the series of events right
after the climax.
- Commonly known as the untangling of events where in
the conflict begins to get resolved.
5. RESOLUTION- happens when the problem/conflict gets
resolved leading to the ending or final scene of the play.
3. CHARACTERS- the persons, animals, or the entities that are
portrayed in the play.
- The playwright usually gives brief, sometimes detailed
description of the characters in the beginning of the script.

4. SETTING- refers to the particular time and place where the


story happened.
-Normally, the playwright describes what the audience will
see onstage in the beginning of the scenes.

5. DIALOGUE- pertains to the conversation between and


among the characters in the play.
-The appropriate manner of verbal expression and the
correct choice of words are necessary for the playwright to
clearly establish the traits, motives and attitudes of the
characters.
