What is Internet

The internet is a telecommunications

network that uses telephone lines, cables,
satellites and wireless connections to
connect computers and other devices to
the World Wide Web. All modern
computers can connect to the internet, as
can many mobile phones and some
televisions, video game consoles and other
devices.

Uses of Internet

The internet can be used to:

 Access a huge 'library' of information from the

millions of websites around the world that make
up the World Wide Web

 Send and receive email messages

 Share photographs and video clips with your

friends and family

 Buy goods and services (and often save

money!)

Navigation through internet and websites

Internet

 The Internet is a world-wide network

where computers are interconnected and communicating with each
other.
 Its backbone consists of interconnected servers with very fast data-
communication connections.
 With the Internet, you can search for information, communicate with
other users, transfer files from one computer to another, download
programs, and e.g. take care of your private banking.

Navigation through Websites

 The Worldwide Web consists of many sites or web sites and moving
from one site to another is known as surfing the Net. Each site
contains information on something.
 The program or application you use to surf the Net is called a
browser.
 First you have to open or launch your browser such as the Internet
Explorer or Google Chrome by double clicking.
 Once you are connected, you will come to the starting page for
searching whatever information you want.

Internet Search and Research

The internet has made researching a topic easier. People with

internet access can simply pull up a search engine, type, and click
away. Following are the simple rules for accurate research.

 Decide where to start your research

 Look for subject-specific databases.

 Ask a librarian

 Use regular search engines with caution

 Choose your keywords carefully.

 Narrow when necessary

What is digital literacy

 Digital literacy means having the skills you need to

live, learn, and work in a society where
communication and access to information is
increasingly through digital technologies like
internet platforms, social media, and mobile
devices.

 This includes the ability to analyze, prioritize, and

act upon the countless digital media 21st century
citizens encounter on a daily basis.

4 Principles of digital literacy

Four principles of digital literacy are;

1.Comprehension

 The first principle of digital literacy is simply

comprehension.

 The ability to extract implicit and explicit ideas from a

media.

4 Principles of digital literacy

2.Interdependence

 The second principle of digital literacy is

interdependence.

 How one media form connects with another, whether

potentially, metaphorically, ideally, or literally.

3.Social factors

 Sharing timely & relevant data within relevant networks.

 Sharing is no longer just a method of personal identity or

distribution, but rather can create messages of its own

4 Principles of digital literacy

4.Curation

 Storing & organizing data in accessible ways.

 Elegant curation should resist data overload and other

signs of “digital hoarding,” while also providing the
potential for social curation - working together to find,
collect, and organize great information.

What is Cyberspace

 Cyberspace refers to the virtual computer world,

and more specifically, is an electronic medium
used to form a global computer network to
facilitate online communication.

 It is a large computer network made up of many

worldwide computer networks that employ
TCP/IP protocol to aid in communication and
data exchange activities.

 Cyberspace's core feature is an interactive and

virtual environment for a broad range of
participants.

What does cyberspace mean to us

 Cyberspace is worldwide and respects no nation's frontiers

 It reaches from the recesses of mongolia to the many-varied

cultures of california.

 It gives people everywhere access to digitized images of the

rare treasures in the Louvre and the British library

 It gives people in inner London guided tours of dinosaur

museums in Canada.

 Children are using it to do their school projects.

What does cyberspace mean to us

 In short, much of human life is represented in cyberspace.

 On a personal level the impact is profound. People meet in

cyberspace, work in it, play in it, learn things and discover
things in it.

 Increasingly, people's relationships, jobs and money will take

place in cyberspace, and that makes it important.
