TITLE: Comparative study of the seismic analysis of
Multistory building using base isolation
and conventional system.
INTRODUCTION:

1) Base isolation is one of the most important concepts for

earthquake engineering which can be defined as separating the
structure from its foundation.
2) In other words, base isolation is a technique developed to
prevent or minimize damage to buildings during an earthquake.
3) It might be thought that structures can be protected from the
destructive forces of earthquakes by increasing the strength of
the structures so that they do not collapse during such events. In
other words, more rigid attachment of a building to its
foundation will result in less damage in an earthquake.
4) However, if the foundation is rigidly attached to the building
or any other structure, all of the earthquake forces will be
transferred directly and without a change in frequency to the
rest of the building.
5) Providing a base isolation device between the building and
the ground can minimize the level of earthquake force
transmitted to the buildings.
ADVANTAGES:

1) Reduced the seismic demand of structure, thereby

maintain the life of structure.
2) The level of safety against earthquake increases
significantly if the structure is built using base isolation.
3) The plastic deformation of the structure can be prevented
and the building can remain still after earthquake and life can
continue as normal.
4) Secondary damage to the structures as a result of falling
furniture can be reduced or restricted in other words the level
of safety is increased, in base isolation.
5) Highly effective in reducing the peak acceleration
transmitted to the structure by the action of earthquake
forces.
6) Preservation of property.
7) Enhances the performance of structure under seismic
loads.
OBJECTIVES:

1) Reducing damage in the structural and non structural

component of the building.
2) Reducing acceleration response to minimize contents
related to damage.
3) Preventing plastic deformation of the structure.
4) Protection of life- Safety of occupants.
5) Improvement for safety of building.
6) Provide an operational facility during the Earthquake.
7) Protection of non structural components & contents.
8) Protection of building frame.
LITERATURE REVIEW

This paper gives a review on base isolation
technique and briefly on other global retrofitting
techniques in the world for making the structures
earthquake resistant.

In this Study of base isolation for five storied
moment resisting frame with lead rubber seismic
isolation has been studied using SAP2000
software.
TYPE OF ISOLATION MATERIALS:

* Elastomeric Bearings.

* High Damping Bearings.

* Lead Rubber Bearings.

* Flat Slider Bearings.

* Curved Slider Bearings or Pendulum Bearings.

* Ball & Roller Bearings

METHODOLOGY

The Chapter deals with the mathematical

modeling of building with different base
isolating units. In order to compare the
seismic response various models will be
prepared using STAAD-PRO. For each case,
seismic analysis will be discussed. Complete
analysis will be carried out for dead load, live
load & seismic load.
OUTCOME

 It can be found out that the base isolation

technique is effective or not in the control of
earthquake forces.

 Also this technique can reduce shear as well as

bending moment in the base storey . If the
forces at the base is controlled then it is possible
that the building is safe against collapse because
the earthquake forces are transferred on the
foundation through the soil.
