Why this Course ?
The objectives of the course are:
1. To impart knowledge on electrical and electronic systems and their subsystems

2. To enhance the understanding of the underlying engineering principles of electrical


and electronic systems

3. To model, simulate and analyze the behaviour of electrical and electronic systems to
predict and improve their performance

4. To design and build models of electrical and electronic systems to meet the specific
needs

5. To impart training on instrumentation and testing of electrical and electronic


systems

Course Aim and Summary

• This subject deals with measurement system which includes


sensors and transducers, signal conditioning circuits and recording
and display devices; static and dynamic characteristics of
measurement system, instrumentation and measurement of
resistance, capacitance, inductance, current, voltage and power.
This subject also deals with signal and function generators and
analyzers

Course Intended Learning Outcomes
After undergoing this subject students will be able to:

1. Describe measurement standards, measurement units and


measurement systems
2. Describe the principles and applications of signal and function
generators and analyzers
3. Develop models of measurement systems and analyze their static and
dynamic characteristics
4. Design appropriate signal conditioning circuits and choose recording /
display devices
5. Set up instrumentation for a system and measure resistance,
capacitance, inductance, current, voltage and power and other
relevant quantities

Basics of Measurements

Measurement systems – Static and dynamic characteristics, Errors in


measurements, Calibration and standard, Digital, Electrical, Electronic
weighing system

Measurement of Resistance

Wheatstone’s bridge, Sensitivity, Limitations, Kelvin’s double bridge

Measurement of Inductance and Capacitance

Sources and detectors, Maxwell’s inductance bridge, Maxwell’s


inductance &capacitance bridge, Hay’s bridge, Anderson’s bridge,
Desauty’s bridge, Schering bridge, Shielding of bridges, Problems

Course Content
Measurement of Power and Energy

Dynamometer wattmeter, UPF and LPF wattmeters, Measurement of


real and reactive power in three-phase circuits. Induction type energy
meter — Construction, Theory, Errors, Adjustments and calibration,
Principle of working of electronic energy meters

Signal generators and analyzers

Function generators – Pulse and square wave generators, RF signal


generators –Sweep generators – Frequency synthesizer – Wave analyzer
– Harmonic distortion analyzer – Spectrum analyzer :- Digital spectrum
analyzer, Vector Network Analyzer –Digital L,C,R measurements, Digital

Basic electronic measurements

Moving coil, Moving iron meters – Electronic multimeters – Cathode


ray oscilloscopes – block schematic – applications – Special
oscilloscopes :– Delayed time base oscilloscopes, Analog and digital
storage oscilloscope, Sampling oscilloscope – Q meters – Vector meters
–RF voltage and power measurements – True RMS meters

Digital Instruments

Digital Voltmeters and Multimeters, Automation in Voltmeters, Accuracy


of DVM, Guarding Techniques, Frequency, Period, Time interval and
Pulse width measurements, Automatic vector voltmeter

Method of Assessment
There are two components for assessment in this subject:
Component - 1: 50% weight (CE)
It has two sub components
Part A: Term Test: 25% Weight
Part B: Assignment: 25% Weight
Two tests will be conducted one at the end of 6th week and the other at
the end of the 12th week, the average of two tests will be the marks
scored in term test for a maximum of 25 marks.
Student is required to submit two word processed assignments each
assignment is set for
25 marks, the average of two assignments will be the marks scored in
assignment for a maximum of 25 marks

Component - 2 : 50% weight
A 3 hour duration semester end examination will be conducted for
maximum marks of 100 and will be reduced to 50% weight

The assessment questions are set to test the learning outcomes. In each
component certain learning outcomes are assessed. The following table
illustrates the focus of learning outcome in each component assessed:

Both components will be moderated by a second examiner
