Syllable and Stress:
A syllable is a combination of a vowel sound
and a consonant sound. For example, there is
only one vowel sound in the word “он”,
therefore it has only one syllable. However, a
syllable can have two or more consonant
sounds but it can have only one vowel, such as
words “дом”, “Март”, “Банк” have only one
vowel sounds, therefore there is only one
syllable in these words.
Syllable and Stress:
 Each word consists of syllable/s. A Russian word has as
many syllables as it has vowels. For example the word
‘мама’, ‘драма’ –has two syllables “ма – ма”, “дра -
ма”. One of the syllables in the word is always
stressed. The vowel in the stressed syllable is
pronounced with greater force than other syllables in
the word. We will be indicating stress by the sign [ ' ],
placed over the stressed vowel. Like in ‘мáма’, the
stress is on the first syllable. Since in monosyllabic
words the vowel is always under stress, we will not
use the sign [ ' ] for them. For example – рот, дом etc.
