Newton’s 2nd

F=MA
Essential Question

 What factors influence force?

Factors That Influence Force

 Mass- amount of matter in an object

 Unit=kg

 Acceleration- rate of change of velocity

 Unit= m/s/s
Newton’s Second Law

 Force=mass x
acceleration
 Mass= force/acceleration
 Acceleration=force/mass
Calculate force. Mass= 10 kg
Acceleration= 3 m/s/s
Calculate force. Mass= 4 kg
Acceleration= 6 m/s/s
Calculate mass. Force= 30 N and
acceleration= 6 m/s/s
Calculate acceleration. Force= 36 N.
Mass= 6 kg.

 Form a hypothesis: if we drop an elephant and feather
off the top of a building and air resistance is eliminated,
which would hit the ground first? Why?
Same Acceleration

 All objects will fall with the same rate of acceleration 9.8 m/s/s
Which figure would require more force
to move? Explain.
Which object would accelerate at a
faster rate?

fired into the sky with an
acceleration of 20 m/s². What
amount of force was applied by the
cannon to launch the firework?

He jumps into the swimming pool
with an acceleration of 5m/s². How
much force is he using to jump into
the pool?
Scenario #9

mass of 1kg. A student who chooses
to not follow the rules throws the
paper with a force of 6 N. What is the
acceleration of the paper?
