INNOVATION AND

DESIGN THINKING
IN BUSINESS
WHAT IS DESIGN THINKING?
 DESIGN THINKING utilizes elements from the designer’s toolkit
like empathy and experimentation to arrive at innovative solutions.
By using it, you make decisions based on what future customers
really want instead of relying only on historical data or making
risky bets based on instinct instead of evidence.

 Itis generally defined as an analytic and creative process that

engages a person in opportunities to experiment, create and
prototype models, gather feedback, and redesign.
 Theprimary purpose of this article is to summarize and
synthesize the research on design thinking to:

A. Better understand its characteristics and

processes, as well as the differences between novice
and expert design thinkers.

B. Apply the findings from the literature regarding the

application of design thinking to our educational thinking.
IMPORTANCE OF DESIGN THINKING
 Itcan help you or your team surface unmet needs of the
people you are creating for.

 It reduces the risk associated with launching new ideas.

 It generates solutions that are revolutionary, not just

incremental.

 It helps organizations learn faster.

3 ESSENTIAL PILLARS OF DESIGN THINKING
 EMPHATY – Understanding the needs of those you’re
designing for.

 IDEATION – Generating a lot of ideas. Brainstorming is

on technique, but there are many others.

 EXPERIMENTATION – Testing those ideas with

prototyping.
WHAT IS INNOVATION?

 INNOVATION is defined as the process of making an

idea or invention into a good or service that creates
value and/or for which customers will pay.

 PRODUCT INNOVATION involves creating new

products or improved versions of existing products
that increase and improve their use.

INNOVATION AND DESIGN THINKING
IN BUSINESS
 The electronics company LG introduced a new type of screen
that is flexible enough to roll up like a newspaper. This is one of
the clearest invention and innovation example as it solves the
problem of portability.

 The Ludlow Traveller suit is an innovation example from J.Crew

as it is made with rumple-proof technology which means no
wrinkles to your suit and ensures that it always looks freshly
ironed- a major time and effort saving innovation.
RADICAL INNOVATION EXAMPLES
 One example of radical innovation comes from Amazon,
one of the best service innovation examples. The
launching of Dash Buttons, which is a small wifi
connected device that allows you to reorder household
essentials with ease is an innovation that drastically
improves efficiency in the home.
PROCESS INNOVATION EXAMPLES

 Zara is one of greatest process innovation examples,

especially in terms of examples of innovation in the
workplace. They do not spend money on advertising and
instead leave it to word of mouth and the labelling on
their bags.
 Zara’s process innovation allows the company to be
effectively market-responsive and gives them a top
position among high street fashion brands and its
definitely one of the most highlighted management
examples of innovation.

 Zara has also developed a process to be able to

respond quickly to market demands and have an
innovative manufacturing process to help optimize
their response to market demands.
