A linear inequality in two variables is an inequality

that can be written in one of the following forms:

𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 < 𝐶
𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 > 𝐶
𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 ≤ 𝐶
𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 + 𝐶 NEXT

Where A, B, and C are real numbers and A and B are not

both equal to zero

An ordered pair (x, y) is a solution of a linear inequality if the
inequality is true when the values of x and y are substituted into the
inequality.

The graph of a linear
inequality in two variables
is the set of all points in the
rectangular coordinates
system whose ordered
pairs satisfy the inequality.
When a line is graphed in
the coordinate plane, it
separates the plane into
two regions called half
planes. The line that
separates the plane is
called the plane divider.

Determine if the point (x,y) = (1,2) satisfies the inequality 2x + 3y > 6.

• Substitute the points, 2·(1) + 3·(2) = 8 > 6. Yes, (1,2) satisfies the inequality
