What is literature?
- art of written work.
- taken from latin word, litera which means letter.
- Things made from letter
Two Major Structure of Literature
Fiction
literature in the form of prose, especially short
stories and novels, that describes imaginary events
and people.
Non-fiction
prose writing that is based on facts, real events,
and real people, such as biography or history.

Two Major Form of Literature
Poetry
Emphasizes the aesthetic and rhythmic quality of
language.
Prose
Applies ordinary grammatical structure and the

HISTORY

Epic of Gilgamesh (2100 B.C.)


 Babylonian epic poem from stories in the
Sumerian Language.
 Heroism, friendship, loss and quest for
eternal life

Historical periods are reflected in literature. It could be a


tribal saga, accounts of the origin of the world and
customs, and myth which carry moral or spiritual message
predominant in the pre urban eras.

Genres of literature

Literary genre is a mode of categorizing


literature. The term originates from French,
designating a proposed type or class.

Four Major genres of literature are:


1. Fiction
2. Poetry
3. Essay
4. Drama

POETRY
- a form of literary art which uses aestetic and
rhythmic qualities of language.

- from greek “poiesis” meaning “making” (more


narrowly, the making of poetry)

- writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative


awareness of experience in language chosen and
arrange to create a specific emotional response
through its meaning, sound and rhythm.

FORMS OF POETRY
a. Sonnet – 13th century of poem of fourteen lines following
a set of rhyme scheme and logical structure.
b. Ode – know as a lyrical stanza
THREE MAJOR PARTS:
 Strophe – pair of stanzas of alternating form on
which the structure of a given poem is based.
 Antistrophe – has the nature of a reply and
balances the effect of strophe.
 Epode – consist of verse of iambic trimester,
followed by a verse of iambic dimeter.

FORMS OF POETRY

c. Ghazal
– poetry that consists of rhyming couplets and
refrains, that shares each line, with the same meter.
- originated in 6th century Arabic verse. It is
derived from the Arabian panegyric qasida.

based on style and the subject matter or
literary characteristics.

Narrative poetry
- Tells a story
- Often reserved for smaller works, generally
with more appeal to human interest

Dramatic poetry
- Written in verse to be spoken or sung.
- Appears in varying forms of many culture.

4. Law
offers a less clear case. Some writings

 Play or drama offers another classical
literary form that has continued to
evolve over the years.
 Generally comprises chiefly dialogue
between characters and usually aims
the dramatic/theatrical performance
rather than reading.

Literary Techniques
• Can be used by authors in order to enhance the
written framework of a piece of literature, and
produce specific effects.
• Encompasses a wide range of approaches to
crafting a work:
• Can lead to the development of a new genre, as
was the case with one of the first modern novel,
Pamela by Samuel Richardson.

Literary Techniques
• Distinguished from literary device, as military
strategy is distinguished from military tactics.
• Devices are specific constructions within the
narrative that make it effective.
• Literary criticism implies a critique and evaluation
of a piece of literature and, in some cases, it is
used in improve a work in progress or a classical
piece, as with an ongoing theatre production.
