• The following is a Health & Safety induction for the Chris


Mee Group.

• Following your completion of this you will also receive a


brief in house induction with the CMSE Safety Officer.

• You will receive a tour of the office and any items in this
induction can be discussed in greater detail.

• Co-operation Required from Employees (1):


Section 13 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act of 2005
outlines the general duties of employees:

• Take reasonable care of your own safety and that of others affected
by your actions or omissions while at work

• To co-operate with the company or any other person(s) to enable the


company to comply with safety, health and welfare related legislation.

• Section 13 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act of
2005 outlines the general duties of employees:
• Not to work under the influence of an intoxicant, and if required, to
attend for tests

• To use any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provided to secure


your own safety

• To report any defects in place, equipment, plant or procedure which


might endanger safety

• Not to misuse any appliance, equipment, PPE or other means


provided for securing safety.

MANUAL HANDLING
HAZARDS

What is Manual Handling?

Part 2, Chapter 4, Reg 68 of the 2007 Safety, Health & Welfare at Work
Regulations define “manual handling of loads” as…

“any transporting or supporting of a load, by one or more employees, and


includes lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying, or moving a
load which, by reason of its characteristics or of unfavorable
ergonomic conditions, involves risk, particularly of back injury, to
employees”

Lifting injuries accounted for 33% of accidents each


year (Source H.S.A.).

A Manual Handling Couse will be arranged for you.

Ergonomics - the study of the interrelationships between people and their


work i.e.

- Working with Display Screen Equipment

- Posture

You will be shown

- how to adjust your chair


- how to adjust the computer screen

• All employees of Chris Mee Group are invited to go for an


EYETEST with a qualified optician at least once every 2 years
and they will be
• refunded through finance dept

• Inform your manager prior to arranging this

• Fire, smoke and toxic fumes can develop rapidly

• Most deaths result from smoke asphyxiation and inhalation of


toxic fumes

• Confusion and panic can set in.

Fire - Raising the Alarm


• Raise the alarm by contacting Reception if possible

• Alert others in the immediate area

• Become familiar with the location of Fire Extinguishers and


Emergency Exits in your work area

• Leave immediately via nearest fire exit

Fire – Fire Fighting


• Do Not attempt to fight ANY fire unless you have been trained

• ONLY trained personnel to use / operate fire fighting equipment

• Never put yourself in danger to fight a fire

• Remember ALL fires start small.

• Ensure you are familiar with the Evacuation Procedure for the Office or
the Site you are visiting/working

• On hearing the alarm at the Chris Mee group Cork Office;

- Make your place of work safe

- Exit the building via the nearest exit

- Proceed to the assembly point located directly in front of the Chris


Mee Group main entrance and wait for roll call.

Centre board located in Reception. This assists us in
ascertaining who is on site at any given time

• The visitors “sign in “ book will be used by the receptionist


during roll call. All visitors to Chris Mee Group including
course participants should sign in and out using this book.

SLIPS TRIPS AND FALLS


HAZARDS

To avoid sips, trips & falls ensure:

- Good housekeeping is maintained

- Surfaces to be kept clean and dry

- Avoid running cables across floor

- Boxes, goods etc. are stored appropriately i.e. racks

- Chairs are in good condition etc.


HAZARDS ( CORK OFFICE)

• The offices are part of a shared building having separate entrance and
exits.

• There is a reception leading left into a canteen area which leads to an


open plan office , and right to a stair well to the first floor.

• The main downstairs office area is open plan - Shared between


Consultancy, Marketing/Operations and Carbon Action personnel

• Upstairs – Open plan office for Training Department, Chris Mee’s


Office, meeting room and training rooms.

• Prevent clutter by hanging coats, scarves etc on coat rack provided

• Laptop / Projector bags stored safely under desks or away from


walkways.
HAZARDS ( DUBLIN OFFICE)

• The Dublin office is on the first floor of the building, the floor is
shared with another company. Doors are clearly signed for Chris
Mee group and training rooms.

• The main office area is open plan


Shared between Consultancy, Marketing and Operations

Training Candidates

• New Candidates arrive for various training courses.


• Candidates are to arrive, sign in and wait at reception or the
canteen until training course starts.
• Candidates are shown location of the training room, rooms are
signed clearly.
• At the start of each training day, trainers will advise on emergency
procedures.

WORKING ALONE
HAZARDS

• We shall try to avoid having any of our employees working alone


wherever possible

• Work of raised risk shall not be undertaken alone i.e.


- Work at height
- Confined space entry

• Lone workers may experience problems when:

- Worker has health problem/condition

- Accident occurs

- There is a loss of mobility and /or consciousness - may be some


time before they are discovered and receive attention.

Regulations 2001

Code of Practice for Working in Confined Spaces


HAZARDS

What is a Confined Space?

Any place, including any vessel, tank, container, vat, silo, hopper, pit, bund,
trench, pipe, flue, well, chamber, compartment, cellar, or any other similar
space which, by virtue of its enclosed nature, creates conditions which gives
rise to a likelihood of accident, harm or injury of such nature as to require
emergency action due to the presence or reasonable foreseeable presence
of:
• Flammable or explosive atmospheres
• Harmful gas, fume or vapour,
• Free flowing solid or an increasing level of liquid
• Excess or foreseeable lack of oxygen
• Excessively high temperature.

• You are PROHIBITED from working or entering any confined space


without appropriate training and authorisation

• Should you need to work in a confined space or you are in any


doubt about the nature of the work area contact your Manager

• As a minimum you must be:


- Trained in all aspects of confined space procedures

- Fully aware and familiar with any Permit System.

Regulations 2007 Part 4 “Work at Height”
HAZARDS

• Working at height is defined as any work :

- Where there is a risk of a fall liable to cause personal injury


- Heights include above ground level, at ground level or even
below ground level

• Examples:
- Ladders
- Scaffolds both mobile and fixed
- Mobile elevated work platforms.

You are PROHIBITED from:

- Working at height, in absence of fall prevention, without personal fall


arrest equipment
- Accessing UNSAFE working platform(s)

• Should you need to work at height inform your site contact and/or Manager

• A “Safe Working Platform” has:

- Guard rails / handrails - (950 mm to 1.20 metres high)


- Fully boarded
- Toe boards
- Secure access.

TRAVEL TO AND FROM

HAZARDS

• Avoid driving for work by using public transport if possible


• Mobile phones should not be used unless with a suitable hands free car
kit. Never dial a number while driving. It is advisable to stop your vehicle
in a safe location to make and receive calls
• Note that some Clients prohibit the use of mobile phones in vehicles while
working on their projects even with car kits.
• Ensure you have read and understood Chris Mee drivers policy
• Ensure your car is in good working order and you have the correct
insurance and drivers licence .
• Ensure you are fit and able to drive.
• Do not smoke or eat while driving.
• Follow the rules of the road and drive in a safe and courteous manner.
• Do Not carry non-employee passengers i.e.
• Hitch-hikers
• Children

• Part 5, Chapter 1 “Control of Noise in the Workplace”


HAZARDS

Hearing loss from noise exposure is permanent :

• There is no cure for hearing loss caused by noise

• The inner ear cells which are destroyed can never be repaired or
replaced

• Hearing loss is gradual, occurring over a long period, often without


notice.

Permanent hearing loss is caused by :

• Continuous exposure to noise levels in excess of 80dBA

• Short exposures to very loud noises (>140dBA)

• Be aware of any situation where you may be exposed to high noise


levels

• Observe and obey all safety signs.

• What is Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)?


• It is any item worn/applied by you to protect you from potential
hazards or hazardous conditions

• Once issued it is your responsibility to ensure that


it is maintained in a safe condition

• Report any defects in PPE ASAP.

Construction Site PPE Requirements


When working on site ensure you wear, as a minimum, the
following Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

- Hard Hat
- High Visibility Jacket/Vest
- Safety Boots

Plus:
- Any client specific general requirements such as
- safety glasses or hearing protection

- Any other task specific PPE such as gloves,


- respiratory equipment, etc., that is required to
- conduct your work safely

health and safety is managed in the workplace

• Amongst other things it:

- States how Health and Safety of employees will be protected

- Contains the findings of a systematic examination of the work place


which identified existing hazards and assessment of the risks.

• All accidents/incidents/injuries or illnesses/near misses


experienced at work must be reported to your Manager

• All accidents/incidents/injuries or illnesses


experienced at a client’s workplace must also be
reported to the client immediately

• Chris Mee Group Accident/Incident Report form must be


completed as soon as possible

• “Form of Notice of Accident” HSA form IR1must be completed by


Chris Mee Group if employee is absent from work >3 days.

SAFETY STATEMENT

• Due to the nature of our work within the office it is not deemed
necessary to have a full time First Aid person

Your Manager should be contacted in the event of any medical


emergency, no matter how small

Only trained first aiders are to administer First Aid treatment and
decide on further treatment. If in doubt seek expert medical attention

The Manager shall arrange for transportation to hospital if required

Anyone going for medical treatment must always be accompanied

• Chris Mee group has a Bullying / Sexual Harassment / Stress Policy


in place which is available from the HR department

if they feel they believe they or experiencing Bullying, Sexual
Harassment or Stress as a result of their work at Chris Mee Group.

is a consideration in all projects, activities both within our offices and

Waste

Should you generate waste during your work or on a project you


must ensure that it disposed of in the correct manner in accordance
with our waste paper, site or other requirements

Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in our offices and on site.


ENVIRONMENT

• Waste paper and cardboard is to be disposed of in the


designated bins provided

•Use both side of paper when printing where


possible

•Only print in colour if required. Check print settings


prior to sending documents for printing

•There is a recycling bin in the kitchen for plastics,


metal and glass
