 The name Troy refers both to a place in
legend and a real-life archaeological
site.
 Due to Troy's location near the Aegean Sea,
the Sea of Marmara, and the Black Sea, it was
a central hub for the military and trade.
 The archaeological site of Troy was listed by
UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1998
Introduction

 Troy is the name of a Bronze age city whose

other names include Hisarlik (Turkish), Ilios
(Homer), Ilion (Greek) and Ilium (Roman).

.
 Inlegend, Troy is a city that was besieged
for 10 years and eventually conquered by a
Greek army led by King Agamemnon in the
‘Trojan war’.
 Troyalso refers to a real ancient city
located on the northwest coast of Turkey
which, since antiquity, has been identified
by many as being the Troy discussed in the
legend. The modern-day Turkish name for
the site is Hisarlik.
 Inthe 19th century, the German
businessman and early archaeologist,
Heinrich Schliemann, conducted a series of
excavations at Hisarlik and discovered
treasures. He is credited with the
discovery of Troy.

 Homer was a legendary Greek author, who
wrote the ‘Iliad’ and the ‘Odyssey’. The Iliad is
set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege
of the city of Troy by a coalition of Greek
kingdoms in the 13th century BCE. There are
references to Troy in ‘Odyssey’ also.
 Homer describes Troy as ‘well-founded’,
‘strong-built’ and ‘well-walled’.
TROJAN WAR

 InGreek mythology, the Trojan War was

waged against the city of Troy by
the Achaeans (Greeks) after Paris of Troy
took Helen from her husband Menelaus,
king of Sparta.
 Agamemnon, king of Mycenae and the
brother of Helen's husband Menelaus, led
an expedition of Achaean troops to Troy
and besieged the city for ten years because
of Paris' insult.
 The walls must have been unusually strong
in order to withstand a ten-year siege. This
is reference a lot of times in the ‘Iliad’
 After a fruitless 10-year siege, the Achaeans used
their craftiness to devise a plan, which was a travesty to
battle strategies. They constructed a huge
wooden horse famously known as the Trojan horse and
hid a select force of men inside including Odysseus.
 The Greeks pretended to sail away, and the Trojans
pulled the horse into their city as a victory trophy. That
night the Greek force crept out of the horse and opened
the gates for the rest of the Greek army, which had
sailed back under cover of night. The Greeks entered
and destroyed the city of Troy, ending the war.
