Sound is a travelling wave or mechanical vibration which is the SHM of pressure

transmitted through a solid, liquid, or gas, composed of frequencies within the range
of hearing and of a level sufficiently strong to be heard, or the sensation stimulated
in organs of hearing by such vibrations.

Wave Motion : By Simple Harmonic Motion
The definition of simple harmonic motion is simply that the acceleration
causing the motion of the particle or object is proportional and in
opposition to its displacement x from its equilibrium position.
ULTRASONIC TESTING
Ultrasonic's use transmission of high-frequency sound waves into a material to detect
imperfections or to locate changes in material properties. The most commonly used
ultrasonic testing technique is pulse echo, wherein sound is introduced into a test
object and reflections (echoes) are returned to a receiver from internal imperfections
or from the part's geometrical surfaces.
