• It can also be Computerized database of financial
information.
• Users of information are those at the organizations or
subsidiary sub unit who may be analyzing it to be able to
decide an certain aspects of it
• Description that the system may produce can be in terms
of the historical background, present situation of the
business and assumption or expected to happen in the near
future.
• The management uses MIS at all
levels of the operations to collect ,
process and store data necessary
for their decisions.
• As a matter of fact, many, if not all
businesses, concentrate on the
alignment of MIS, with business
goals and objectives in order to
achieve a competitive advantage
over the other businesses in the
industry
Origin and Evolution of MIS
MIS represents the electronic automation of
several different kinds of business process and
systems. These business processes and systems
can be of any form of any of the following:
• Actual counting of items
• Tallying the result of counting
• Record-keeping of the output
• Accounting techniques under financial aspect of
the operations
 1880’s – start of system implementation, the
automation emerged in a form of tabulating
cards
 After World War II, computers emerged.
 During 1970’s- punch cards were replaced by
magnetic storage media(tape and disks)
• 1970-1990s- Systems innovation waves
broaden the fundamental virtues of clear
information systems in all corporate
functions and to all sizes of businesses
• Other MIS functions were seen in the
areas of manufacturing and inventory
• It was in 70’s when personal computers
appeared and was spread widely in the
80’s
• Since then, the need for networked PC’s
was seen, making it appear during 1990s
• The World Wide Web then came of age
simultaneously in the same year.
MIS in Small Business
Utilizes online applications to reach customers
Runs a software for functions like billing customers,
scheduling customer appointments for special
occasions
Uses accounting software capable of cutting checks
for suppliers
Uses a Point-of-Sale (POS) cash register
In effect ,all businesses engaged in consulting,
marketing, sales,research, communications as well as
other service industries including hotels,resorts and
restaurants which they deploy substancial databases.
MIS has come of age and has become an integral part
of small businesses and more valuable for large
businesses
