Functions
•is a relation between a set of inputs
and a set of permissible outputs
with the property that each input is
related to exactly one output.
Types of Functions:
a. One-to-one correspondence

a. One-to-many correspondence

b.Many-to-one correspondence
Example a:

(1,D) (3,C)

(2,B) (4,A)
Example b:

( , ) ( , )

( , ) ( , )
One-to-one correspondence

is a function between the elements

of two sets, where each element of one
set is paired with exactly one element of
the other set, and each element of the
other set is paired with
exactly one element of the first set.
Example a:
(x, a) (y,d)

(x, b) (z,e)

(y,c)
Example b:
(4,0) (4,-4)
(16,-2) (16,6)
(9,-1) (9,5)
One-to-many correspondence

a relationship between sets or

amounts where a number of items
can be summarized by one
number.
Example a:
(-1,1) (2,4)
(1,1) (-3,9)
(-2,4) (3,9)
Example b:
(1,11) (4,15)
(2,11) (5,15)
(3,13)
Many-to-one correspondence

Two or more elements in A are related to two or more

elements in B
Exercises:
Identify what type of functions are illustrated below. Write your answers on a ½
crosswise paper.
1. 2.
3.
Test 1. Make your own Family Tree from your
grandmother up to the present. Write it in a short size
bondpaper.

Test 2. Make your own example in each type of function

(at least 3 examples). Write it in a ½ crosswise paper.
