INTRODUCTION
The FERTILISERS AND CHEMICALS TRAVANCORE
LTD. is one of the major fertilizer manufacturing
companies in south india.
Main products of the company include
ammonia,sulphuric acid, ammonium phosphate-
sulphate(FACTAMFOS), ammonium sulphate ,
caprolactum and also other complex fertilizer.
1.Estimation of turbidity of water
 The estimation of turbidity of a water sample is based on the
comparison of the intensity of light scattered by the sample with that
scattered by a standard suspension under the same conditions using a
nephelometer.
 A cuvette was filled with distilled water and placed in the compartment
of a nephelometer and the reading was adjusted to zero.
 The cuvette was removed and filled with standard 40 NTU solution.it
was placed in the compartment and the reading was adjusted to 40.
 The cuvette was then removed and rinsed with the sample. The sample
was soured into the cuvette and placed in the compartment and the
reading was noted
Turbidity NTU = Reading from the nephelometer
2.Estimation if moisture in factumfos
 About 12 g of the sample was taken in a petridish and dried in an
incubator at 700c for an hour.
 It was cooled in a desiccator and weighed.
 The difference between the weight of the sample before and after drying
was used to determine the moisture content in it.
% moisture = (w2-w3)/(w2-w1)*100
Where,
w1 = weight of petridish
w2 = weight of petridish+sample
w3 = weight of petridish + dried sample
3.Estimation of total hardness of water

 100ml of water sample was taken in a China dish. About 5ml of

ammoniacal buffer follow by 2 drops of EBT were added and the
solution was titrated against EDTA taken in a Burette.
 End point is wine red colour to blue. The titre value was noted.
 EDTA forms stable complexs with Ca and Mg ions.
 When the dye EBT is added to the solution containing Ca and Mg
ions at pH 10 , a wine red complex is formed and when the solution is
titrate against EDTA solution, the EDTA forms a complex with the Ca
and Mg ions present in the dye complex and the dye changes back to it
original blue colour.
 Total hardness of CaCo3 ppm= (T.V*1000)/volume of sample
4.Estimation of residual chloride in water

 Coliforms present in water is removed by treating it with chlorine.

 The residual chlorine is then estimated by adding o-toluidine to the
sample which develop yellow colour and the colour is compared with
standard disks in a Lovibond comparator.
 ppm RCl2 = reading from Lovibond comparator
CONCLUSION

 All these analyses are carried out in the lab to ensure the
quality of the product, from the plant have less effect on the
environment.
 The company thus strictly follow the two their quality and
environment policies.
