INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL
FITNESS AND NUTRITION

• Physical Activity are important to keep


oneself healthy. Engaging in physical
activities must be part of ones lifestyle.
• Using gadgets and similar devices is not
wrong, however one must also make it a
point to engage in physical activities.
What is Physical Activity?

• The WHO defines PHYSICAL ACTIVITY


as any bodily movement produced by the
skeletal muscle that requires energy
expenditures.
• Physical Activity include:
• Playing
• Working
• Doing house chores
• Recreational Activity
What is Exercise?

• According to WHO it is a type of physical


activity that is,
• Planned
• Structured
• Repetitive;
• and purposeful in the sense that the improvement
of one or more components of physical fitness.
Physical Inactivity

• This term is used to identify people who do


not get the recommended level of regular
physical activity.
• There are various factors that contribute to
physical inactivity.
• Sedentary Lifestyle
• Environmental Factor
Despite these factors, one must still
find the time to engage adequate physical
activity to maintain good health.
According to WHO adult must have
150 minutes of moderate intensity physical
activity.
Types of Physical Activity

• Aerobic Activity
• Muscle strengthening activity
• Bone strengthening activity
• Stretching
Aerobic Activity
Also called cardio or endurance
activity, uses the large muscle of the body
such as in the arms and legs to move for a
sustain period of time.
Once performing aerobic activities it
enhance once breathing and heart rate
increase in the process, which help to
improve the efficiency aerobic energy
production and cardio resperatory
endurance.
Examples
• Running
• Swimming
• Hiking
• Bicycling
• Jogging
• Dancing
• sports
Muscle Strengthening Activity
• Any activity in which the muscle work
against an applied force or weight.
• Also called resistance training
• This activity improve the strength, power,
and endurance of the muscle
Example:
tug of war, climbing, digging in the
garden, climbing stairs.
Bone Strengthening Activity
• This activity produce force on the bones
for bone growth and strength .
• Examples;
• Jumping jacks
• Hopping
• Weight lifting
Stretching
• Refers to any type of movement in which a
specific muscle or tendon is deliberately
flexed or stretch.
• Helps improve flexibility and ability of the
body joints to move fully.
• Examples:
• Toe touching
• yoga

Philippine Traditions on Dance
• Dance has been a part of Filipino life since
time immemorial. Since the ancient times,
early Filipinos have used rhythmic
movements to express their emotions,
beliefs, and faith.
• This movements are imitated what they
see in their environment such as, swaying
of trees and the motion of animals.
Traditions
• Way of thinking, behaving, or doing
something that have been used by the
people in a particular group.
Traditional Dances /Folk
Dances
– This are dance practices that have been
passed on or handed down from one
generation to another.
– This dances are performed to relieve the
traditions of early Filipinos
According to Basilio Villaruz
• Philippine Dance is generally composed of
the following:
• Those that propitiate the spirit
• Those that are imitative of animals life or activity
• Those meant for socializing and celebrating
• Those that were inherit from colonial masters
• Those that mentioned above that have now been
performed for tourism programs for both cultural
and economic use
Pre Colonial Dances
• In the Philippines, many of the pre-colonial
or indigenous dances are basically Malay
in origin until Western colonizers came
and influenced the native dance traditions.
• Pre-colonial dances can be classified
– As being religious
– Imitative of life activities or movements of
environment
– For socialization
Religious Dances
• This involves communicating with GODS,
including dance rituals on death, after life
recovery from illness and veneration of
Gods.
• Occupational dances
– Mimicry dance that imitate the movement of
nature, examples
• Itik itik
• tinikling
Modern and Contemporary
Dances
• Modern dance
• The rigid and premeditated style ballet made some
dancers of the 19th century to rebel and experiment
on new style that is more loose and flexible.
• The result of this experiment was the birth of
modern dance in late 19th century.
• It eventually flourished in the early 20th century.
• Compared to ballet, modern dance is more free
and relaxed as it focuses more on the dancers own
interpretation of the music rather on the structured
steps as in ballet.
Three periods of modern dance
• Beginning 1900s
• Start 1930s
• Last after second world war. (it was after
world war when modern dance became
contemporary).
Proponent of Modern Dance
• Modern Dance at the beginning 1900s
included the American dancers;
• Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis and the
German dancer Mary Wigman.
• This system countered the then popular artificial
mannerism usually seen in theater.
• Another influence of early modern dance is the
system called eurhythmics, which was developed
by swiss music educator Emile Jaques Dalcroze.
• Eurythmics is the system for teaching musical
rhythm through body movement.
1930 modern dance
• Start 1930s when modern dance further
develop with the second wave of modern
dancers.
• This second wave of modern dancers
transformed natural human actions such
walking, running and breathing into dance
movements.
Elements of Modern Dance

there are 5 elements of modern dance.

Body
• If dance is an art form, then the body is the
instrument used by the artist.
• In using his or her body, the dancer may
be relatively still or constantly moving
throughout the performance.
Action
• Movements that the body perform, makes
the modern dance distinct from ballet.
• It utilizes body weight to enhance
movement, movements that are exact.
Space
• It refers to the area where the dancers
perform.
• It describe how he or she maximize the
use of space to stay in one place or more
constantly to another.
• Space offers variation to dancers.
Time
• Movements are done in a performance, it
is important to observe proper timing in
every movement, which is commonly in
accordance to the rhythm of the music or
is synchronized with the action of the other
dancers.
Energy
• It refers to the force of action that brings
character to the movement.
• In modern dance, energy can be shown in
the variation of movements.
• Concept of countertensions which refers to
giving equal energy to two opposing body
parts.
