OF FOLK DANCE
A. GEOGRAPHICAL ORIGIN
1. NATIONAL DANCES
 Found Throughout the island.
Examples:
a. Cariñosa – is a Philippine folk dance of Hispanic origin.
It is closely associated with the island of Panay and
Visayas region
meaning “The affectionate Love”

Examples:
b. Pandanggo – derived from thr Spanish “Fandanggo”
It is popular in many places in the Philippines.
It may be danced at any social gatherings and is
usually accompanied by clapping.
c. Balitaw – is an extemporaneous exchange of love
verses between a man and a woman.
It is found mainly in the Tagalog and Visayan
regions.
1. NATIONAL DANCES
Found Throughout the island.
Examples:
d. Rigodon de Honor – is an elegant dance
It is a square formation dance.
e. Kuratsa – is a Filipino traditional dance of Courtship
where the male approaches and courts a lady in
form of a dance.
f. Surtido – square dance originated in Bantayan, Cebu.
It is a cobbling together of Spanish, Mexican, and
French influences.
2. LOCAL DANCES
> It can be found in specific locality.
Examples:
a. Tinikling – It is originated in Leyte among the Visayan
Islands in the central Philippines as an imitation of
the Tinikling bird.

b. Esperanza – is a lively dance from Camarines Sur.


It was supposedly named after a lovely maiden
called Esperanza.
2. LOCAL DANCES
> It can be found in specific locality.
Examples:
c. Maglalatik – also called Magbabao.
d. Subli – Originated in Bauan, Batangas
it is a ceremonial worship dance performed in homage
to the Holy Cross.
e. Biniganbigat – Means every morning. This courtship
dance was found in Bangued, Abra.
B. NATURE

1. OCCUPATIONAL DANCES
 Depict actions of a particular occupation.
EXAMPLE:
a. PLANTING
b. Harvesting – Paggapas & Paggi-ik (Threshing)
c. Pounding – Celebrate and taste the fresh grain.
d. Winnowing- Pahangin
2. Religions/Ceremonial
 Associated with religion, vows, and ceremonies.
EXAMPLE:
a. DUGSO – Bukidnon dialect means dance. It is a ceremonial
dance usually performed during feasting, or kaliga, as a
thanksgiving for a good harvest.
b. PUTONG – was found in Marinduque.
To celebrate a dear friend; relatives, or a landlord’s birthday
with this ceremonial dance.
c. Sta Clarang Pinung-pino – The Obando fertility Ritesis a
Filipino dance ritual.
3. COMIC DANCE
.> Depecting Funny Movements
EXAMPLE:
a. Makonggo – comic dance from Sta Maria, Bulacan.
Derived from the Tagalog word “Chonggo or unggo”
b. Kinotan – is the Ilokano word for Ant.
4. Game Dance
> With play elements (dance mixers)
EXAMPLE:
a. Lubi-Lubi – The ballroom-folk dance is very popular in the Bicol
regions. It has many variations. The one described here is a different
version from one given in the “Philippine National Dance”. This
dance may be introduced as a social mixer
5. Wedding Dance
> Performed during wedding feasts.
EXAMPLE:
PANASAHAN – This traditional dance is still performed by the old
people of barrio Panasahan, Malolos, Bulacan, in social gatherings
like wedding celebration, or the feast of Saint John.
It is a ceremony held at the very early dawn of the wedding day,
usually about two or three o’clock in a morning.
Formations are very important
to all dances. It gives beauty
and adds more definitions of the
dance. Formation may change
in every figure in the dance.
