WHAT ARE WASTES?
Waste is unwanted or useless materials. In biology ,waste is
any of the many unwanted or useless materials.
KINDS OF WASTES
 Solid wastes
Waste is solid forms, domestic ,commercial and industrial waste.
Three types of solid waste material
 Garbage
 Rubbish
 Refuse
Example: plastics, Styrofoam containers, bottles, cans, papers, scrap
iron, and other trash
 Liquid wastes
Waste in liquid form
Example: domestic washings chemical oils waste water from ponds,
manufacturing industries and other sources
CAUSES OF WASTES:
Throwing Garbage Everywhere.
Lack of Community involvement.
Lack of Space
Advancement in Science and Technology.
Lack of Planning for WM while Planning Townships.
Lack of Funds.
Poor implementation of Environment Protection Laws.
EFFECTS OF WASTES:

Health Hazard
Unhygienic and Unhealthy
surroundings.
Improper disposal kills Aquatic
animals.
Green House Effect
Air Pollution
Soil Contamination
WASTE MANAGEMENT CONCEPT

• The 3 R’s
(Reduce,Reuse,Recycle) to
be followed for waste
management.
REDUCE
• Disposable goods: paper plate, paper bowl,
Styrofoam cup, plastic spoon, roll of paper
towels, paper napkin; Durable goods:
ceramic/plastic plate, metal spoon,
glass/plastic drinking cup, dish towel, cloth
napkin)
• Recovery of one tonne paper can save 17
trees.
REUSE
• Instead of buying new containers from the
market, use the ones that are in the house.
• Don’t through away the soft drink can or
bottle cover them with home made paper or
paint on them and use them as pencil stands
or small vases.
RECYCLE
• Use shopping bags made of cloth or jute
which can be used over and over.
METHOD OF DISPOSAL
• Dumping
• Controlled Tipping or Sanitary Landfill
• Incineration
• Composting
• Manure pits
• Burial
