Video technology was first developed for
mechanical television systems, which were
quickly replaced by cathode ray tube (CRT)
television systems, but several new
technologies for video display devices have
since been invented.
1950’s-the first commercially successful
video tape format for broadcast used.
1970’s-Sony launches the first video cassette
format, UMATIC(reaching the UK in 1973).
1980’s-Sony introduces the BETACAM
CAMCODER, the first integrated camera and
video recorder, for professional use.
1990’s-Sony ceases production of BETAMAX
VCR’S for the US market (1993)
2000’s-worldwide production of DVD-video
discs surpasses that of VHS tapes (2002)
2010’s-Sony announces that it will discontinue
the PLAYSTATION portable, the only device that
used Sony’s own UMD (Universal Media Disc)
optical disc that could contain video games,
feature length-length films, or music (2014)
Educational Videos-are excellent examples of
teaching and learning concepts.
Promotional Videos- differ from instructional
and educational videos in that they’re
targeting a very specific viewer and speaking
to their needs, then presenting a solution and
concluding with a ‘call to action’, asking the
viewer to take action.
Informational Videos- These are the most
simplistic types of videos – cut and dry
information delivered as succinctly as
possible.
Documentary Films (and Video)- The
definition of a documentary
film is “nonfictional motion picture intended
to document some aspect of reality, primarily
for the purposes of instruction, education, or
maintaining a historical record.” (Wikipedia).
Entertainment Videos- entertaining videos
simply for entertainment’s sake.
