Main Source of Livelihood in Sulu-an
▪ Fishing
Eighty to ninety percent of Sulu-anons rely on fishing for their livelihood. They catch tuna, blue marlin,
octopus and other scrombrids. Sulu-anons who earn income from the fishing industry not only include
fishers but also fish buyers and vendors, pump boat operators and workers, boat builders and workers.

▪ Copra
Before Typhoon Yolanda destroyed 90% of coconut farms in Sulu-an more than four years ago, Sulu-an
coconut farmers harvest and sold to Guiuan about 400 to 500 sacks of copra every three months. Today,
barangay officials reported that the Sulu-an copra harvest is a measly 4 to 5 sacks of copra from the
remaining coconut farms. Thus, Sulu-anons have depended more on fishing as their main source of
livelihood.

▪ Banana
The island is also known for its different types of native banana species. Like the coconut farms,
Typhoon Yolanda also damaged banana farms. Though banana farms had recovered fast over the past
years, Tropical Storm Urduja toppled banana plants last year.
Average Household Income in Sulu-an
▪ In 2015, a family of five in Eastern Visayas needed at least PhP 6,232 on the average
every month to meet the family’s basic food needs. This amount represents the
monthly food threshold.
▪ According to the Ma. Gina Talavera, Secretary of Barangay Sulu-an, who has been
primarily responsible for gathering and consolidating key data for the Community
Based Monitoring System (CBMS) and even Typhoon Yolanda Damage and Needs
Assessment (DANA) reports, the average household income in Sulu-an is around PhP
10,000 per month.
▪ Still, Secretary Talavera doubts the correctness of this figure because household
respondents usually underreport their actual household incomes during surveys and
interviews. By doing so, household respondents believe that they can avail of relief
goods, cash assistance and other services from government and NGOs who prioritize
most vulnerable households and sectors in their projects.

SULU-AN ENERGY SITUATION
Energy Poverty in Sulu-an
Home to some 1,540 residents, mostly depending on fishing and farming for
their livelihood, Suluan has never been connected to the main island electricity
grid.

"About 30 kilometers of wide, blue ocean separate us from mainland Guiuan,"

said barangay chairperson Cesario Badar Jr. "We have been relying too long on
an energy mix of kerosene, diesel generators, batteries, a few solar lamps and
small solar home systems for lighting and communication, and to run simple
household appliances."
