Blood

Vessels
and Blood
- carries the blood - known as body’s
throughout the body. highway of blood.

Blood
Vessel
- tubular structure
containing blood.
Three Types of Blood Vessels

Arteries
Carries oxygenated blood from the heart to other
parts of the body through the aorta.

Veins
Carries deoxygenated blood from the body to the
heart through superior and inferior vena cava.

Capillaries
Smallest blood vessels that connects smallest
arteries and smallest veins.
Artery
Pulmonary Arteries - transport blood that has low oxygen
content from the right ventricle to the lungs.
(exception to the rule).

Aorta - largest artery in the body.

Arterioles - smallest arteries that play a key role in

regulating blood flow into the cells.
Tunica Externa
- composed of
connective tissue
containing varying
amounts of collagenous
fibers.
Tunica Media
- “the thickest layer”
composed of layers of
muscle that supports the
entire blood vessel and at
the same time, changes
the diameter of the vessel
to regulate blood flow and
to handle high pressure of
the blood flowing
through it.
Tunica Intima
- composed of
connective tissue and
lined with simple
squamous epithelium.
Veins
Pulmonary Vein – transport blood from the lungs that is
high in oxygen (exception to the rule).

Vena Cava - largest vein in the body.

Venules - smallest veins that play a key role in regulating

blood flow into the cells.
2. Veins have one-
way valves whereas
arteries do not have
any valves.

1. Arteries have
thick, elastic,
muscular walls
whereas veins have
thin walls with few
elastic fibers.
Capillaries
- smallest and the most numerous blood vessels that form
connection between the arterioles and venules.

- function in the exchange of materials-gases, nutrients and

waste products of metabolism between the blood and tissue
cells.

-One cell thick (for easy movement of materials).

Movement is through diffusion, filtration, osmosis.
Blood
- transports oxygen,
nutrients and other
minerals through out the
body.
Types of Blood Cells
Red Blood Cells
(erythrocytes) -They are
shaped like slightly indented,
flattened disks. These are the
most abundant cells, and
contain hemoglobin.
Types of Blood Cells
White Blood
Cells (leukocytes) - cells
of our immune system
that defends the body
against infections and
foreign materials.
Types of Blood Cells
Platelets (thrombocytes)
- are involved in the
clotting (coagulation) of
blood. When we bleed
the platelets clump
together to help form a
clot.
