• Is the scientific study of origins of
humans, how we have changed over
the years, and how we relate to each
other both within our own culture and
with people from other culture.
• Anthropology is Arts and Science
The term originates from two
words in Greek :
• Anthropos meaning “man” as in “human
being”
• Logos meaning “study”

fossils and artifacts.
FOSSILS – are biological remains of
plants, animals and humans.

ARTIFACTS – manmade remains such as


clothing and tools.
LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY
• It examines the relationship between
language and culture.

• Studies the life ways and traditions

KEY CONCEPTS IN
ANTHROPOLOGY
Evolutionism – First recognized in
natural science through the works of
Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel,
Alfred Russel Wallace and Charles
Lyrell.
The perspective of Darwin was later
adapted by Socila Scientist in
understanding human society through
the theory of Unilineal Evolution.
Cultural Relativism – Valuable mental
tool used by most anthropologist
as they study about culture.

It promotes value free analysis of


other cultures as they study and
understand the society.
Culture – The key elements of study in
the field of anthropology.
Totality of the life ways of a group of
people.

RESEARCH METHODS IN
ANTHROPOLOGY
• anthropology, ethnography and the making of
ethnographic methods;
• ethnographic fieldwork, participant-observation and the
‘tacit dimension’;

• multi-sited research and the changing ethnographic
