Catholicity Protestantism
 Catholicity is a concept that  Protestantism is the second

ordination.

 Catholics- All clergy are required to be male.


Priest and bishops must also be celibate.
MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE-
 Protestant- Marriage is a contract, but is not
unbreakable. Divorce is discouraged.

 Catholic- Marriage is seen as an unbreakable


contract. Remarriage after divorce is not
permitted unless there is some canonical
impediment to the marriage. In this situation,
an annulment may be granted.
AUTHORITY OF THE POPE-
 Protestant- The pope is the leader of the
catholic church, having no authority to speak
for the church as a whole.

 Catholic- The pope is the ‘vicar of Christ’. He


has supreme authority within Christendom.
PURGATORY-
 Protestant- Purgatory is rejected- Christ’s
death on the cross is sufficient to remove the
penalties for all our sins.

 Catholics- It is a state of cleansing and


preparation for heaven. Also it is a state
where punishment for unremitted venial sins
may be repented. Venial sins are sins that
are not depriving the soul of a state of grace.
SACRAMENTS-
 Protestant- There are two sacraments-
Baptism and Eucharist(often called ‘Holly
Communion’ and ‘Lord’s Supper’)

 Catholic- There are 7 sacraments- Baptism,


Confirmation, Eucharist, Holy Orders, Holy
Unction, Marriage (Holy Matrimony) and
penance (Confession).
APPEARANCE AND LIFESTYLE
OF PRIEST-
 Protestant- Priest should wear ordinary robes
and get married if they want to.

 Catholic- Catholics said priest should wear


special clothes because of their special link
with god. Priest had to remain unmarried and
devote their lives to god.
ROLE OF PRIEST-
 Protestant- Protestant thought people could
find god without a priest.

 Catholic- Catholics said that people needed


the priest as a link between them and god.
THE APPEARANCE OF
CHURCHES-
 Protestant- Protestants thought that they
should be plain, so that people concentrated
on minister and what he said about god.

 Catholic- Catholics thought that churches


should be decorated with paintings and
statues, to show god’s glory.
