Introduction
1. Poultry byproducts include the remaining material after the edible
meat has been sold
2. Recovery and reuse of many by products

Waste management
There are mainly two types of waste
• Liquid waste
• Solid waste
Solid waste management
• Composting
• Biogas production
• Rendering
Composting
• Decomposition of organic materials
• All kind of organic waste can be digested
• Assisted by the microbes
Bio gas production
• Anaerobic digestion with anaerobic organism
• Primarily methane
• Archaea(methanogens)
Rendering
• Process that converts animals waste into stable, value added
materials
• Specially rendering animal fat into purified fats like lard or tallow
Liquid waste treatment
• Plants generate a significant amount of waste water
• Relatively high content of organic mater from protein, fat and
microorganism
• According to government rules the waste water should be treated
Waste water treatment
The main steps of waste water treatment can be divided into
• Preliminary treatment
• Primary sedimentation
• Secondary treatment
• Secondary sedimentation
• Tertiary treatment
• Disinfection
Preliminary treatment
• Removal of large particle
• Mashes/screens are used
• Several meshes with variable size is used
Primary treatment
• Remove small particles
• Sedimentation is effective
• Clarifiers can be used
Secondary/biological treatment
• Removes organic content in waste water
• Bacteria are added to waste water streams
• Oxygen is added to support
Secondary sedimentation
• More clarifiers are used
• Sludge is settled down in the bottom
• Collected and used for biogas production or fertilizer
Tertiary treatment
• Filtration is done
• Removal of small color and odor compounds
Disinfection
• Last stage prior to discharge into rivers and lakes
• Chemical agents such as chlorine and hydrogen peroxide is used
• Physical means such as uv light
conclusion
• Byproduct disposal is both a challenge and opportunity for the meat
industry
• The goal is to sell the byproducts
• It is expected that this trend will continue as the industry
• Searches for more ways to increase the added value of byproducts
