Common Core Standard and Objective

 CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1
 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of
adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in
all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the
unknown number to represent the problem.1

 Students will be able to answer a word problem using subtraction and addition within 20
and turn it in showing the strategy they used to solve it. S

Lets look at a Math problem

 23+14=
 Am I going to compose or decompose
23 and 14?
Solve

 23+14=

 Lets start with 23!

 What number is in the tens place?
 How many units of 10 do I need to represent that?
23+14=
What number is in the ones place in the number 23?
How many units of 1 do I need to represent that?
So, we know that there are two units of 10 and three units
of 1 in the number 23.
23+14=
Lets look at the number 14.
What number is in the tens place?
How many units of 10 do I need to represent that?
23+14=
=

What number is in the ones place in the number 14?

How many units of ones do I need to represent that?
Now we now there are one unit of 10 and four units of 1 in
the number 14.
23+14=
Are we going to compose or decompose our units of 10’s
and 1’s.
23+14=
We have three units of 10 and seven units of 1.
So, we know that 23+14=37
Lets Review what we Learned

 We should always ask our self if we are composing (putting together) or decomposing
(taking apart)
 We then need to look at the ones place and the tens place of numbers
 We can then represent them with units of 10’s and units of 1’s.
 This will help us find the answer to our math problem!
