ANTIOXIDANTS

ANTIOXIDANTS
HELLO
OXIDATION
Oxidation is a normal and necessary process that takes place
in your body.

3
ANTIOXIDANTS

Antioxidants are molecules capable of

inhibiting the oxidation of other
molecules.
Oxidation form free radicals and start
chain reactions that damage cells.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants terminate these chain
reactions by removing free radical
intermediates and inhibit other
oxidation reactions.

4
TYPES OF ANTIOXIDANTS
There are three primary types of antioxidants found in nature.
These include phytochemicals, vitamins, and enzymes.

5
ANTIOXIDANT ENZYMES

Enzymes are types of antioxidants that

come from the protein and minerals we
eat as part of our daily diets.
In order for antioxidant enzymes to
provide optimum antioxidant activity,
they require co-factors such as iron,
copper, selenium, magnesium, and zinc.

6
ANTIOXIDANT VITAMINS

The human body does not produce

vitamins. So, it is essential to include
them in our daily food through foods or
supplements. Common antioxidant
vitamins include vitamins A, C, E, folic
acid, and beta-carotene.

PHYTOCHEMICALS
Phytochemicals are the antioxidants
that are naturally used by plants to
protect themselves against free
radicals.
Some examples of PHYTOCHEMICALS:
• Carotenoids
• Flavonoids
• Allyl Sulfides
• Polyphenols

8
CLASSIFICATIONS BY HOW THEY WORK
Antioxidants can also be classified by how they work.

9
HOW THEY WORK

PREVENTATIVE CHAIN BREAKING

Some work by preventing Some (or most) work through
the oxidative process neutralizing the free radicals by
donating their electron to the
before it can begin. free radical, and in the process
Such as antioxidant enzymes becomes a free radical but of a
produced by the body lesser potent nature.
