National Artist of the Philippines

• The Order of National Artists (Orden ng Pambansang


Alagad ng Sining) is the highest national recognition given
to Filipino individuals who have made significant
contributions to the development of Philippine arts, namely:
Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film,
Broadcast Arts, and Architecture and Allied Arts.
• The order is jointly administered by the National Commission
for Culture and the Arts and the Cultural Center of the
Philippines and conferred by the President of the Philippines
upon recommendation by both institutions.

National Artists are given a Grand Collar symbolizing their


status. Likened to the US National Medal for the Arts and the
Order of Culture of Japan, the recipients embody the highest
ideals of humanities and aesthetics and ideal expression of
Filipinos as exemplified by their outstanding works and
contributions.
Visual Arts
José T. Joya
(June 3, 1931 – May 11, 1995)
National Artist for Visual Arts, 2003

- A former dean of the University of the Philippines' College of


Fine Arts.
- He pioneered abstract expressionism in the Philippines.
- He was awarded a Fulbright-Smile-Mundt grant which enabled
him to pursue a master's degree in Fine Arts in 1956–57.
- His canvases were characterized by "dynamic spontaneity" and
"quick gestures" of action painting. He is the creator of
compositions that were described as "vigorous compositions" of
heavy impastoes, bold brushstrokes, controlled dips, and diagonal
swipes"

Guillermo Tolentino
(July 24, 1890 – July 12, 1976)
National Artist for Visual Arts-Scupture , 1973

- was born in Malolos, Bulacan. He attend School of Fine Arts in


University of the Philippines under Vicente Rivera for painting and later
for sculpture under Vicente Francisco.

- A Filipino sculptor and professor of the University of the Philippines.

- He was designated as a National Artist of the Philippines for Sculpture


in 1973.

- He is consider as the "Father of Philippine Arts.

Fernando Amorsolo
(May 30, 1892 – April 24, 1972)
National Artist for Visual Arts 1972

- Was born in Paco, Manila.


- was one of the most important artists in the history of painting
in the Philippines.
- A Portraitist and Painter of Rural Philippine landscapes.
- He is popularly known for his craftsmanship and mastery in
the use of light.
- He was named as the "Grand Old Man of Philippine Art"
during the inauguration of the Manila Hilton’s art center, where
his paintings were exhibited on January 23, 1969.

(November 4, 1912 – March 31, 1969)
National Artist for Visual Arts 1973

- was a muralist from Angono, Rizal.


- most distinguished practitioner of mural painting for many
decades and best known for his historical pieces.
- He was also involved in Costume Design in Philippine
Cinema.
- Some of his murals have suffered big damage over the years.
The "Pageant of Commerce" emerged from several years of
restoration in 2000.

National Artist for Visual Arts- Sculpture 1976

- was born in Tagbilaran, Bohol.


- was known as the "Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture"
Through Proclamation No. 1539.
- He was proclaimed National Artist for Sculpture in 1976 when
he was 46, making him the youngest recipient of the award to
date.
- He is the first and only Boholano given the distinction as
National Artist of the Philippines in the field of Visual Arts.

- was a Filipino Painter.


- Was born in Barrio Bolosan in Dagupan, Pangasinan
- He led the revolutionary Thirteen Moderns, who engaged their
classical compatriots in heated debate over the nature and function
of art.
- He was named a National Artist in 1976.
- he was considered the “apprentice teacher” in art class due to his
talent.

National Artist of Architecture 1973

- was a Filipino architect, teacher and a community leader.


- He studied Engineering at the University of the Philippines and later,
at the University of Kansas, where he received his bachelor's degree in
Civil Engineering.
- He was regarded as the Dean of Filipino Architects.
- He was one of eight children of the Philippine Revolution veterans
Julio Nakpil and Gregoria de Jesús.
- Known as “Father of Philippine Architecture” (and the very first
National Artist for Architecture) .

Pablo Sebero Antonio, Sr.
(January 25, 1901 – June 14, 1975)
National Artist of Architecture 1976

- Antonio was born in Binondo, Manila in 1901.


- He was orphaned by the age of 12, and had to work in the daytime in order to
finish his high school education at night.
- He studied architecture at the Mapua Institute of Technology but dropped out
of school.
- A pioneer of modern Philippine architecture.
- he was recognized in some quarters as the foremost Filipino modernist
architect of his time.
- The rank and title of National Artist of the Philippines was conferred on him
by President Ferdinand Marcos.

National Artist of Architecture 1990

- He was born in Silay, Negros Occidental.


- was a Filipino architect, artist, and interior designer known for his
use of concrete, floating volume and simplistic design in his
various projects.
- An avid collector, he was fond of modern painting and Chinese
ceramics.
- He was proclaimed a National Artist of the Philippines for
Architecture in 1990 by the late President Corazon C. Aquino.

degree in the field of architecture
- He was bestowed with the title of "national artist" for his

- took up BS Architecture at the University of Santo Tomas


where he graduated in 1936.
- He placed 7th in the licensure exams in the 1938.
- He passed the licensure examinations in 1938 to become the
82nd architect of the Philippines.
- He also had a diploma in liturgical art and architecture from
the Rome-based International Institute of Liturgical Art.

National Artist of Artchitecture

- was a Filipino architect considered one of the most influential Filipino


architects of the 20th century, for having pioneered the art of
Philippine neovernacular architecture.
- he was popularly known as the architect of the Coconut Palace, his
other notable works include the EDSA Shrine, the Davao Pearl Farm,
and Amanpulo resorts.
- Mañosa devoted his life's work to creating a Filipino identity in
architecture, advocating design philosophies that harken “back to
the bahay kubo and the bahay na bato,” and other traditional
vernacular forms.

-was born in San Fernando, La Union, Philippines


-was a Filipino composer and pianist.
-She was Kasilag's first solfeggio teacher. The second was Doña Concha
Cuervo, who was a strict Spanish woman.
- She is particularly known for incorporating indigenous Filipino
instruments into orchestral productions.
-she took up composition, and on 1 December 1945, she performed her
own compositions in a concert at Philippine Women's University.

Antonio Molina

National Artist of Music 1912

- was a Filipino composer, conductor and music administrator


- He was named a National Artist of the Philippines for his services to
music.He was also known as the Claude Debussy of the Philippines
due to his use of impressionism in music.
- He was appointed to teach harmony, composition, music history, and
violincello at the UP Conservatory of Music,pursuing a career in music
education until being appointed dean of the Centro Escolar Conservatory
of Music. He founded the CEU String Quartet which was professionally
organized and financed by its music school.

Jovita Fuentes
(February 15, 1895 – August 7, 1978)
National Artist for Music 1976

- was a Filipina soprano singer.


- She was born in Capiz to a well-off couple named Canuto and
Dolores Fuentes. At an early age she displayed interest in music,
learning the contemporary songs at that time.
- n 1925 Fuentes made her debut as Cio-Cio-San in Puccini's Madame
Butterfly, at the Teatro Municipale de Piacenza,Another of her
notable roles were of Mimi in La Bohème, Pietro
Mascagni's Iris and Richard Strauss' Salome. She later became an
instructor upon her return.
Works
It was during a concert sponsored by the Asociacion, with
the goal of promoting folk songs from different regions of
the country, where Fuentes first performed in public, the
folk song Ay! Kalisud (Ah, Misery). She had recorded this
song for Odeon Records in Germany in 1928.
Fuentes garnered numerous other awards and citations,
including the Presidential Medal of Merit in Music in 1958
and was recognized as National Artist in music in 1976. She
passed away in Manila on August 7, 1978.
Felipe Padilla de León
(May 1, 1912 – December 5, 1992)

- was a Filipino classical music composer, conductor, and scholar.


- He played the trombone in cabarets and circuses, and later worked as
an assistant conductor of the Nueva Ecija High School Orchestra,
where he started composing music.
- To improve his composing skills he again enrolled to the University
of the Philippines, and graduated in 1939 with a diploma of music
teacher and conductor.
- Much later, he continued his studies under Vittorio Giannini at
the Juilliard School in New York, U.S.

José Maceda
(January 31, 1917 – May 5, 2004)
National Artist for Music 1997

- was a Filipino composer and ethnomusicologist.


- Maceda was born in Manila, Philippines, and
studied piano, composition and musical analysis at École Normale de Musique de
Paris in France.
- He conducted fieldwork on the ethnic Music of the Philippines. From about 1954,
he was involved in the research and composition of musique concrète.
- As an ethnomusicologist, Maceda investigated various forms of music in Southeast
Asia, producing numerous papers and even composing his own pieces for
Southeast Asian instruments.
His notable works include:

-100 mixed and 25 male voices (1968)
Cassette 100 for 100 cassette players (1971)
- Ugnayan for 20 radio stations (1974)
- Udlot-Udlot for several hundred to several thousand

(April 30, 1910 – April 2, 2002)
National Artist for Music 1997

- was a Filipino composer and lyricist who is credited to writing


not less than 4,000 songs.
- was recognized as a National Artist of the Philippines for Music
and Literature in 1997.
- He is also known for using the leaf as a musical instrument which led
- to being recognized as the "only man who could play music using a leaf" by
the Guinness Book of Records.
- Aside from being a musician, Celerio is also poet. He was also a film actor
who appeared in various Philippine films of the 1950s and 1960s.

- he was Executive and Artistic Director for several years of the defunct
San Miguel Foundation for the Performing Arts.

musicals, choral pieces, a Mass set to unaccompanied chorus,
and orchestral pieces, to commercial recordings of popular music,
film scores and television specials.

- is a Filipino composer, musicologist and ethnomusicologist.


- He is a National Artist of the Philippines for music, and
University Professor Emeritus of the composition and theory
department the College of Music of the University of the
Philippines Diliman.
- Santos was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in
1987.
His works include:
- Ding Ding Nga Diyawa
Nabasag na Banga at Iba’t iba pang Pinag-ugpong-
ugpong na Pananalita sa Wikang Pilipino para sa
