1 – OVERWORK IT.

Run the pump

Continuously At higher
capacities, heads or
speeds than those
specified. That’s right,
Twenty four hours a day,
seven days a week.
There will be no labour
dispute. The pump will
have to die of a broken
shaft or burnt-out
bearings.

II – STARVE IT
Do not feed your
pump with the oil or
grease for the
bearings. Be a sadist,
an empty oil cup is a
beautiful sight. Your
reward is quick.
Death in very short
order.

III – STAB IT
Open the suction cover or
strainer of your pump. Fill
it with plenty of grit,
sand, scale etc. These
are just fantastic for
erosion and abrasion of
pump internals,
especially
wearing ring and shaft
sleeve areas. Very
effective way to stab to
death.

IV – POISON IT
Change the fluid you are
pumping, making sure
that the materials of
construction are not
suitable. For better
results, add some
corroding chemical
additives. Let some hot
liquids be pumped. Soon
you will have a look-alike
of swiss cheese complete
with all the holes. Keep
the skeleton in the
museum.

V – CHOKE IT
Make sure that the NPSH
available is less than that
required by the pump. If that
doesn’t work, follow these
grue-some methods. Lower
the water level sufficiently
below the pump or let the
suction strainer be clogged
with debris and don’t clean it or
increase the temp-erature of
fluid without increasing the
suction pressure. You will get
beautiful music. Disregard it.
The impeller suction vanes will
7/4/2019 be eroded beyond repair and 5
you have achieved your goal.
VI - FRY IT
Operate the pump at shut-off
for a long time. Make sure
the bypass line is closed
tight. Touch the pump, isn’t it
nice and hot? As there is no
flow of liquid to carry the
heat, soon you have a well
fried pump in your plant.
(Precaution –Don’t miss the
excitement by cracking the
discharge calve or opening
the bypass)

VII – SHAKE IT TO PIECES
Are you a sadist of the
highest order? Then give
your pump a slower death.
Run the pump in misaligned
condition. Install on a
flimsy foundation. Pump or
driver will move out of
place during operation.
Soon you could start the
collection of broken
pieces.

7/4/2019 7
VIII – BREAK ITS LIMBS
Impose heavy piping
loads on suction and
discharge nozzles. Let
there be misalignment for
pipe and pump flanges.
Avoid expansion joints for
thermal expansion. Soon
you will have broken
suction and discharge
nozzle and twisted
castings. If you are lucky
you could wrench the
pump clear off its
bedplate.
7/4/2019 8
IX – DROWN IT
So you have a packed
stuffing box and a drain in
the bearing bracket for gland
leakage.
Plug the drain. Liquid leaking
will collect in the bearing
brackets. The oil will get
contaminated and bearings
will be corroded.
Alternatively, allow
excessive leakage the box.

X – NEGLECT MEDICAL CHECK-UPS

Avoid periodical or annual

check-ups as recommended
by the manufacturer. Don’t
check the packing, gaskets,
“O” Rings, gland studs etc.
New coat of paint, just
forget
it. Never give a shot of
grease. Change of oil-filter is
a no-no. Soon your pump will
be so sick, death is sure.
