Objectives

At the end of the lesson the students must be

able to:

a. identify and illustrate functions using

ordered pairs, table of values and graph

b. present real life situations using functions

with input and output.

c. appreciate the topic and cooperate

X must not be repeating
Using different method
We can find it easily

By mapping
By graphing
Or by table of values
By listing ordered pairs

Function
Function related or connect one set to another set
in a particular way.
A function is a relation defined as a set of ordered
pairs (x,y) where no two or more distinct ordered
pairs have the same first element (x);That is, every
value of x corresponds to a unique value of y. A
function can Be named using any letter of the
English alphabet.
How can we know if the given
example is a function or not?

Table of values Mapping

Ordered pairs
Following are some examples of ordered pairs.

(3, 2), (-5, 0), (12, 4), (8, -7)

Piece wise function

Is a function which consists of two or more

functions in a specific domain

Given the function f(−1)=

f(x)= 6x−3 x<0 f(0)=
6x−6 x≥0 f(2)=
Example: A Doctor's fee is based on the
length of time.
•Up to 6 minutes costs $50
•Over 6 and up to 15 minutes costs $80
•Over 15 minutes costs $80 plus $5 per minute
above 15 minutes
Which we can write like this:

You visit for 12 minutes, what is the fee?$80

$80$80
You visit for 20 minutes, what is the
fee? $80+$5(20-15) = +$5(20-15)
$105$80 = $105
Examples:
Plants rely on the amount of sunlight
and rainfall for growth.

Your salary depends on the

number of hours you work.

The amount you will pay on a

gas station depends on the
number of liters you will have.
GROUP ACTIVITY
The students will be divided into 4
groups, each group will identify if the
given is a function or not. For group 1
and 2 by the use of ordered pairs, group
3 and group 4 by the use of graph.

After you identify it, each group will

construct their own input and output
functions. Once every group is done
you may discuss your work here in
front.
Group 1 and 2

Seatwork

Identify whether the relationship that exists

between each of the following pairs indicates a
function or not then explains.

1.) A jeepney and its plate number

2.) A teacher and his/her cellular phone
3.) A students and his ID number
4.) A pen and the color of its ink
5.) An athlete and his/her shoes
1.) Function. A jeepney can only be assigned one
plate number.
2.) Not a function. A teacher may have two or
more Cellular phones.
3.) Function. A student may only be issued one ID
number.
4.) Not a function. There are some pens that have
two or more colors of ink contained in only one
unit.
5.) Not a function. There is some athlete that has
more than one shoe.
Assignment

Evaluate the following.

1.) Let f be a function defined by f(x) = 5x-3.
Find the following.

A. f(-2)
B. f(3)
C. f(h)
D. f(1)
