WHAT IS A SENTENCE?

it is a group of words that expresses complete thought.


It has subject and verb. (independent clause)

SIMPLE SENTENCE
• contains one independent clause.
• What’s an “independent clause”? It’s one subject followed
by one verb or verb phrase. It expresses a single idea.
Example:

The beggar was ugly and mean.


Luisa has a cheerful disposition.
My head feels like it is a balloon.
COMPOUND SENTENCE
• A compound sentence has two independent clauses joined by
coordinating conjunctions.
FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet so,)

Example:
It was warm day so we took off our coats.
She lost her book but she didn’t look for it.
