• To discuss the Conversion Factor
• To appreciate Conversion Factor as a process
An arithmetical multiplier for converting a quantity
expressed in one set of units into an equivalent
expressed in another.

A conversion factor is a numerical ratio to express

a measurement from one unit to another unit.

A numerical factor used to multiply or divide a quantity

when converting from one system of units to another.

Measurement conversion:

mass and weight,

distance and length, capacity and volume,

temperature, and many more physical quantities.

The measurement or extent of something from end to end; the
greater of two or the greatest of three dimensions of a body

 1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters (m)

 1 inch (in.) = 2,540 cm
 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeter (cm)  1 foot (ft) = 30,48 cm
 1 centimeter (cm) = 10-2m  1 mile (mi) = 1,609 km

 1 millimeter (mm) = 10-3m  1 mil = 10-3 in.

 1 centimeter = 0,3937 in.
 1 micron (μ) = 10-6m
 1 meter = 39,37 in.
 1 millimicron (mμ) = 10-9m
 1 kilometer = 0,6214 mile
 1 angstrom (A) = 10-10m
Area is defined as the number of square units that covers a closed
figure.

 1 square meter (m2) = 10,76 ft2

 1 square mile (mi2) = 640 acres

 1 square foot (ft2) = 929 cm2

 1 acre = 43,560ft2
is the quantity of three-dimensional space occupied
by a liquid, solid, or gas. Common units used to express volume
include liters, cubic meters, gallons, milliliters, teaspoons and
ounces.
 1 liter (l) = 1000cm3 = 1,057 quart (qt) = 61,02 in3 = 0,03532 ft3

 1 cubic meter (m3) = 1000 l = 35,32 ft3

 1 cubic foot (ft3) = 7,481 U.S.gal = 0,02832 m3 = 28,32 l

 1 U.S. gallon (gal) = 231 in3 = 3,785 l

 1 British gallon = 1,201 U.S.gallon = 277,4 in3

In physics, the property of matter that measures its
resistance to acceleration. Roughly, the mass of an object is
a measure of the number of atoms in it. The basic unit of
measurement for mass is the kilogram.

 1 kilogram (kg) = 2,2046 pounds (lb) = 0,06852 slug;

 1 lb = 453,6 gm = 0,03108 slug

 1 slug = 32,174 lb = 14,59 kg

is a way of measuring how quickly something is
moving or being done, or something moving fast.

 1 km/h = 0,2778 m/sec = 0,6214 mi/h = 0,9113 ft/sec

 1mi/h = 1,467 ft/sec = 1,609 km/h = 0,4470 m/sec

is a measure of mass per volume.

 1 gm/cm3 = 103 kg/m3 = 62,43 lb/ft3 = 1,940 slug/ft3

 1 lb/ft3 = 0,01602 gm/cm3

 1 slug/ft3 = 0,5154 gm/cm3

is a quantitative description of an interaction that
causes a change in an object's motion. An object may speed
up, slow down, or change direction in response to a force.

 1 newton (nt) = 105 dynes = 0,1020 kgwt = 0,2248 lbwt

 1 pound weight (lbwt) = 4,448 nt = 0,4536 kgwt = 32,17 poundals

 1 kilogram weight (kgwt) = 2,205 lbwt = 9,807 nt

 1 U.S.short ton = 2000 lbwt

 1 long ton = 2240 lbwt

 1 metric ton = 2205 lbwt

in physics, the capacity for doing work. It may
exist in potential, kinetic, thermal, electrical, chemical,
nuclear, or other various forms.

1 joule = 1 nt = 107 ergs = 0,7376 ft lbwt = 0,2389 cal = 9,481 X 10-4 Btu

1 ft lbwt = 1,356 joules = 0,3239 cal = 1,285 X 10-3 Btu

1 calorie (cal)= 4,186 joules = 3,087 ft lbwt = 3,968 X 10-3 Btu

1 Btu (British thermal unit) = 778 ft lbwt = 1055 joules = 0,293 watt h

1 kilowatt hour (kw h) = 3,60 X 106 joules = 860,0 kcal = 3413 Btu

1 electron volt (ev) = 1,602 X 10-19 joule

is the rate (energy amount per time period) at
which work is done or energy converted.

1 watt = 1 joule/sec = 107 ergs/sec = 0,2389 cal/sec

1 horsepower (hp) = 550 ft lbwt/sec = 33,000 ft lbwt /min = 745,7

watts

1 kilowatt (kw) = 1,341 hp = 737,6 ft lbwt/sec = 0,9483 Btu/sec

The force per unit area that one region of a gas, liquid,
or solid exerts on another. Pressure is usually measured in Pascal units,
atmospheres, or pounds per square inch.

1 nt/m2 = 10 dynes/cm2 = 9,869 X 10-6 atmosphere = 2,089 X 10-

2 lbwt/ft2

1 lbwt/in2 = 6895 nt/m2 = 5,171 cm mercury = 27,68 in water

1 atmosphere (atm) = 1,013 X 1015 nt/m2 = 1,013 X

1015 dynes/cm2 = 14,70 lbwt/in2 = 76 cm mercury = 406,8

Is a multi-step process that:
involves multiplication or division by a numerical factor,
selection of the correct number of significant digits,
and rounding.

• To make enough chocolate pudding for the family you
will need 300 milliliters (ml) of milk. How many liters (l)
will this be?
• To solve this problem, your child must first know that
there are 1,000 milliliters in one liter. To determine how
many liters would be needed for the pudding, your child
will convert milliliters to liters by dividing: 300 ÷ 1,000 =
0.3 liters.
2. On a road trip, Ronnie sees a sign that says 212
kilometers (km) to the nearest gas station. How many
meters (m) away is the gas station?

3. Barry measured the kitchen table to be six feet (ft)

long. How many inches (in) is this?
4. The large bag of frozen peas weighs 32 ounces
(oz). How many pounds (lb) is this?

5. Mom weighed the bag of candy for the parade

and said it weighed 2.7 kilograms (kg). How many
grams (g) is this?
2. Your child will need to know that there are 1,000
kilometers in one meter. Like the above problem, your
child must divide to solve: 212 ÷ 1,000 = 0.212 meters.
3. To calculate how many inches long the kitchen table is,
your child would need to multiply: 6 x 12 = 72. To be able
to correctly solve this problem your child must know that
there are 12 inches in one foot.
4. For your student to convert ounces to pounds, he or
she would need to divide: 32 ÷ 16 = 2 pounds. This will
require your child to know that there are 16 ounces in
one pound.

5. There are 1,000 kilograms in one gram. To calculate

the amount of grams the candy weighs, your child should
multiply: 2.7 x 1,000 = 2,700 grams.
