What are Community Linkages?

The domain of Community Linkages focuses on

the ideal that school activities are meaningfully linked to
the experiences and aspirations of the students in their
homes and communities. Thus the domain focuses on
teacher’s efforts directed at strengthening the links
between school and community activities, particularly as
these links help in the attainment of the curricular
objectives.
Establishes learning environments that respond
to the aspirations of the community.

Key Question for the Teacher:

“Are the goals and characteristics of the teaching-learning activities I implement
relevant to the experiences, values and aspirations in my student’s
communities?

Specific Questions for the Teacher:

1. Can my students see how the goals and activities in school relate to the
values and aspirations in their homes and communities?
2. “Do I draw from resources, ideas, and activities from my students’
communities in my teaching learning activites?”

3. “Do I try to involve members of the community in supporting the learning

goals of my classes?”

the community.
Appropriate and effective collaboration and
teaming are seen as key factors to community
development, learning and family self-sufficiency.

Greater interaction between schools and

communities can enhance educational outcomes. It also
builds the roles of schools as contributors to the vitality
of their community.
Using “real world” examples drawn from the
community can strengthen the school curriculum, and
the involvement of students in the community can
enhance their broader knowledge and confidence.
Vibrant communities depend on the next
generation having the values and skills to be active
citizens and schools benefit society as a whole fostering
these values in students. Having experience with
communities as part of their school curriculum can
expose help students become more effective citizens as
young people and as future contributors to society.
