PROVINCE OF ILOCOS
• Ilocos is a province divided into two: ILOCOS SUR AND
ILOCOS NORTE .Inhabitants are called ILOCANOS
• Located in the northwestern coast of Luzon.
• A well-preserved Spanish Colonial city of Vigan.
• Vigan’s mestezo district is characterized by cobblestone
streets and mansions with wrought-iron balconies.
• Major provinces are: Ilocos Norte,Ilocos Sur,San
Fernando and Pangasinan.
Ilocos Norte

• The birthplace of the former President Ferdinand


Marcos
• Its capital is Laoag City.
• Wind mills of Ilocos Norte is the famous and major
source of electrical energy in the province.
Ilocos Sur
• Vigan City is the the capital of Ilocos Sur
• Founded by Juan de Salcedo in 1572
• Ilocos Sur’s economy is agrigarian

• A Filipino Poet
• The author of the epic BIAG NI LAM-ANG
• He was a foundling found by an old woman after
floating in a basket between Bantay and Vigan
• Blind since birth, but grew up as a talented and smar
• Took lessons in Latin and Spanish .Also learned the local
dialects and Ilocano Isneg.
• Translated prayers to sermon
• Translated DOCTRINA CRISTIANA to Ilocano .Printed in
1593 as one of the first book in the Philippines

LEONORA FRANCISCO

• April19, 1849-October 4, 1884


• Poet in Spanish and Ilocano
• At 10, she wrote poems in Ilocano
• She married a politician at the age of 14
• Her works was lost but the preserved ones are in the
library of Madrid,Londres at Paris

ISABELO DE LOS REYES

• Known as Don Belong


• Prominent politician,writer and labor activist
• Founder of Aglipayan Church ,an independent Christian Protestant Church in
Catholic Tradition
• Won an award at the agenof 23
• Imprisoned in 1879 for revolutionary activities
• Deported in Spain and jailed until 1898
• Therefore, he got influenced by writing of European socialists and Marxists
• Returned to Philippines in 1901 and founded the first labor union
• Had a 27 children in his 3 successive wives

protesting against marital rape and caused her denial by
an all-male jury from winning Ph’s Commonwealth
Literary awards in 1940
• POEMS,a poem collection published in 1940 and was
revised in 1950
