Psalm 78:72

David “shepherded them with integrity” of heart

and “with skilful hands he led them”
Integrity = Fruitfulness?

Ministry Skills
Integrity-------------------------Fruitfulness
Leadership Skills

Integrity of heart is the foundation and the combination

of Ministry and Leadership skills lead to fruitfulness.
Ministry Focussed People
Ministry can be defined as;
An activity that serves the needs of people. It
includes such things as preaching, teaching,
counselling, praying, visiting, feeding and
cleaning.

Focussed on the task (getting the job done)

Leadership Focussed People

Leadership can be defined as;

An activity which directs, influences or facilitates
ministry by others. It includes such things as
planning, decision making, personnel selection and
vision setting.
Leadership focussed people are working on people to
fulfil the ministry needs and not concerned with the
task as much as facilitating the task that is being
done.
Dangers of Ministry focussed people in Leadership positions.

No one is able to be raised up by you to replace you

Unable to replicate yourself in your ministry area
Long term leaders are not developed in your area
Have to recruit people all of the time.
Tend to have a turnover of people coming and going from the
ministry area.
People see their commitment to you as doing a task rather than
a task that comes from personal connection
Your Ministry load undermines your Leadership Function
“Without Leaders and Leadership teams,
ministry focussed teams drain the energy of
the senior pastor and burnout occurs”
I.Jagelman “The Empowered Church”
“People with developed leadership skills will
train other leaders while fulfilling their
ministry responsibilities, because they
understand the personal consequences of
failing to do so.”
I.Jagelman “The Empowered Church”
Current Context;

The Real; We are all serving as best we can to bring

strength and order to the church but may not
necessarily be serving in the place that may best
suit our calling and gifting.
The Ideal; As we continue to do our best in what has
been given to us to accomplish and where we have
been placed in church life, we do all we can to be
profitable whether we believe this is our ultimate
place to serve in or not.
Session 2
Previous Session Recap;

Ministry is what you do to meet practical needs

and serve people.
Leadership is what you do to build people so
they can build the church.
Questions that resulted from Last weeks session

Aren't we all meant to be leaders?

What is the correct Leadership and Ministry Mix for me?

What do I do if I'm an M in an L position, or an L in an M position?

Can I operate if I am an M in an L position?

Can an M develop L quality traits?

Biblical Law of Reproduction

Gen 1:12
The earth produced vegetation: plants bearing seeds, each
according to its own type, and trees bearing fruit with seeds,
each according to its own type. God saw that they were good.
Every seed can only produce after its kind

You can only produce your type and level of leadership!

“People cannot give to others what they themselves do not
possess”
Aren't we all meant to be leaders?

Yes…“Generically”…Personal Decision Making ie

Home, Family, Finances, etc
No… “Specifically” not all Personal Leaders
become public leaders in the church.
Spiritual Gifting, Graced, Called and natural
talents to compliment their calling.
What is the correct Leadership and Ministry Mix for me?
We need be able to know when each area is most important to
exercise at the appropriate time.*
This is a question only you can answer, but it will be reliant on
what is being expected of you in your role and responsibility
at Coastlife Church.
Some people can become strong M & L’s and find the tension of
operating in both of them (at the appropriate time) makes
them effective.
It is important that you concentrate on building your strengths
as opposed to strengthening your weaknesses.
What do I do if I'm an M in an L position?

Some M’s need to recruit L’s around them to help

build their teams and areas of responsibility.
Some M’s may realise that this is what they do
best and must allow L’s to be released to allow
further growth.
Can I operate effectively if I am an M in an L position?
You will be finding it a challenge to grow and develop
people, systems, and forward plan what you are
responsible for. Answer;
An M can develop L quality traits.
Your next steps need to be;
Acknowledge, Ask, Accept help & support
Recruit to your weaknesses (Value Diversity)
Or Pass on the Baton.
Biblical Ministry/Leadership Analysis

 Peter (Started an M finished an L)

 David (Started an M finished an L)
 Joseph (Started an M finished an L)
Joseph was a primary leader operating in a secondary role and
exemplified leadership traits above ministry traits.

 He demonstrated practical insight and strategy to build for the future.

 He gathered and built into people (skills and knowledge) so they
could be confidently delegated to.
 He created and facilitated structures to take Egypt from a place of
famine to a place of fame and fortune.
 He gathered resources and finances for the task at hand.
 He initiated & built key relationships that brought influence to the
organisation.
 He had the ability to build organisational strength.
 He did this while in complete humility and servitude to his senior
leader (Pharaoh)
Oncken’s Five Degrees of Leadership Initiative

1. Wait to be told (Lowest Level)

2. Ask what to do
3. Recommend, then take resulting action
4. Act but advise at once
5. Act on own (report routinely)
