Background of Study

Based on pre-observation which had been conducted at

SMP PGRI Sukamakmur on August 1st, researcher
found that there are inappropriate learning materials with
incorrect grammar, blurry pictures and unclear
instructions. This problem make students easily bored
and confused. Because of it, the researcher decide to try
to develop reading material by using illustrated book that
can be used in teaching learning process at seventh grade
of SMP PGRI Sukamakmur.
Identification of Problem
• The students have low interest in reading.
Because the reading material that they use was in
text which make them did not interest in reading it.
• The students have difficulty in understanding text
types in English. Because English language was
not their first language.
• The lack of appropriate reading learning materials
because the reading materials do not meet the
students need.
Limitation of Problem
Due to the limitation on the part of the researcher,
this research focus on developing illustrated book as
reading learning materials for students’ at seventh
grade of SMP PGRI Sukamakmur.

The researcher will focus in developing illustrated

book as reading materials.
Formulation of Problem
• What kind reading material needs for
students at seventh grade of SMP
PGRI Sukamakmur?

• How is the process of developing

illustrated book as reading material
for students at seventh grade of
SMP PGRI Sukamakmur?
Objective of the Research
• The objective of this research is to
investigate what kind of reading material
that needed for students at seventh grade
of SMP PGRI sukamakmur.
• In developing reading material that
students need, the researcher will
elaborate with teacher and expert to make
a proper reading material for students at
seventh grade of SMP PGRI
Sukamakmur.

Theoretical Framework
“Concept of Reading”
According to Nunan (2003: 68) says that reading is a
fluent process of readers combining information from a
text and their own background knowledge to build
meaning.

In addition, Mikulecky (2011: 5) states that reading is a

complex conscious and unconscious mental process in
which the reader uses a variety of strategies to
reconstruct the meaning that the author is assumed to
have intended, based on data from the text and from the
reader’s prior knowledge.
Theoretical Framework
“Learning Materials”
A learning material is anything which is used by teachers
or learners to facilitate the learning of language. Material
could be books, pictures, charts, cassettes, video,
workbooks or photocopied exercises. They could also be
newspaper, food packages, photographs, instruction
given by the teacher, or task written on cards (Tomlinson,
1998).

According to Allwright in Kitao and Kitao (1997),

materials should teach students to learn. It should be
resource books for ideas and activities for
instruction/learning, and that they should give teachers
rationales for what they do.
Theoretical Framework
“Learning Materials”
Hutchinson and Waters (1987: 107-108) identify some principles
which will guide in writing the materials
• Good materials should have impact for the learners. The impact of
materials can be noticed from the effects on the learners, such as
their attraction, intention, and interest in the materials.
• Materials should help learners to feel at ease.
• In order to make the learners produce the authentic language use,
the comprehensible and authentic input should be used.
• Materials should provide the learners with opportunities to use the
target language to achieve communicative purposes
• The materials should be varied from the guided tasks, semi guided
task, to production task.
RESEARCH DESIGN

Gall, Gall and Borg state that, Research

and Development is a process used to
develop educational products and
validate the product by testing it. They
suggest that the products will be
systematically field-tested, evaluated and
refined until they meet specified criteria
of effectiveness, quality, or similar
standards
Research Subject
The subject in this research will be students in VII-
A class at SMP PGRI Sukamakmur. The reason
why researcher use VII-A as sample of this research
is VII-A class is recommended by English teacher in
SMP PGRI Sukamakmur, because VII-A class
are more cooperative rather than other classes. And
also VII-A class is has better ability compared to
other classes at seventh grade levels at SMP
PGRI Sukamakmur.
Research Procedure
•The researcher will give questionnaire to students to collect the data
1

•The researcher will analyze the result from questionnaire to plan the product of learning material
2

•The researcher will write the course based on the students questionnaire analysis and guideline it
3 with current curriculum and syllabus

•The researcher will make the first draft of learning material based on the appropriate with
4 questionnaire result and syllabus

•The researcher will give the first draft to the expert for evaluation. In this step, the researcher will
5 give a questionnaire expert judgment as the evaluation tools.

•After the material evaluated by the expert, the researcher will implement all the revise and
6 suggestion to make the final draft that next will be used as teach reading learning material.
