– To identify how and what to look for on the work
site to ensure Hand Tools are in good condition to
work with
– To understand the requirements, obligations,
procedures and safe work practices to use Hand
Tools

Responsibility

Employer
Each employer shall be responsible to
provide safe working conditions, along with
safe tools and equipment for their
employees, and ensure all safeguards are in
place

Responsibility

Supervision
Supervision is responsible to ensure their
employees are provided a safe place to
perform their work activities, and have the
proper tools and equipment along with the
required PPE to perform those work
activities.

Responsibility

Employees
 Employees are responsible for executing
their work assignments in a safe manner,
following established safety procedures and
using the personal protective equipment as
defined by Project Procedures.
 Inspect all tools and equipment prior to start
of work and maintain good housekeeping in
their work area.

General

 Hand tools are non-powered


– They include anything from axes to wrenches

 Greatest hazards misuse & improper


maintenance
 Examples of misuse:
– Using a screwdriver as a chisel

– A wrench as a hammer

 Employee’s shall be instructed in proper care


and use prior to usage
 Use only for purpose for which they were
designed
 Only use tools that are in good condition
– Worn or broken tools must be repaired or
replaced immediately

 Employees shall use appropriate PPE


 Tools shall be properly store when not in use
– Proper storage includes toolboxes, tool racks, and
cabinets
 Tools shall not be left in overhead work areas
– Could create hazard to personnel and equipment
below

 Employees shall not carry sharp or pointed


tool in pockets or belt
 Tools shall not be modified, tempered, or
heated without manufacturer written
consent
 Red tag damaged or defective tools and
return for repair or disposal

 Never use spark producing hand tools


around flammable substances
 Use spark-resistant tools made from:
– Brass

– Plastic

– Aluminum

– Wood

 Home made/job made tools shall not be used


 Hand tools shall be inspected prior to use
 When working overhead with hand tools
evaluate and address need for tool lanyards

Hammers & Sledges

 Employees shall wear appropriate eye


protection

 Check surrounding before swinging hammer


or sledge

 Always keep your eyes on object to be hit

 Keep hands out of line of fire or use tool


holder
 Don’t use tools with loose, splintered, or
cracked handles
– The head may fly off and strike user or another
worker

Chisels & Punches

 Wear appropriate eye protection


 Keep chisels sharp and in good condition
– Repair or replace dull or damaged tools
 Strike blows squarely and aim tool away from
body
 Mushroom heads shall be ground down to
prevent splintering
 Use tool holder

Wrenches

 Never use a "cheater" to increase leverage


 Don’t use wrenches with sprung jaws
– They could slip

 If possible, pull on wrench handle rather than


push
 Also, adjust stance to avoid a fall if wrench
slips

Wrenches

 Never use hand sockets on power or impact


tools
 Don’t use a hammer on a wrench unless it is
the striking face type
 Ensure wrench properly fits the nut/bolt

Wrenches

 Never turn adjustable wrenches so pulling


force is applied to adjustable jaw

Pliers

 Don’t use pliers for cutting hardened wire


unless specifically made to do so
 Don’t use pliers as a striking tool
 Don’t use dielectric pliers
– Shut off power and follow LOTO procedures
when working with electricity

Screwdrivers

 Always use screwdriver with the right type of


blade and properly fits screw size
 Never use a bent or damaged screwdriver
 Don’t use a screwdriver as a pry bar or chisel
 Keep handles free of grease and oil

Hand Saws

 Wear appropriate eye protection


 Keep saw blades sharp
– Replace blades with lost cutting teeth
 Lubricate blades with light machine oil
– Prevent heat build-up, which can cause blade to
break
 Store to prevent someone from falling onto
or bumping into blades

Hand Tool Inspection

 Inspect before and after each use.


 Look for:
– Cracked/loose handles, casings, guards
– Bent shafts
– Dull, rounded, chipped cutting surfaces
– Scrapes on gripping surfaces
– Mushroomed striking surfaces
