Investigation on seismic performance of

Ductile Concrete-Filled Double-Skin Tube

beams

Presented By,
Introduction

Earthquakes around the world have underscored the tremendous

importance of understanding.

Ground motion caused by an earthquake , structures will undergo

vibrations causing lateral deflection.

Lateral displacement leads to structural collapse.

Develop innovative design concepts to better protect civil structures.

Introduction (Cont.,)

Shear wall and steel bracings for seismic strengthening reinforced

concrete structures.

 Steel braces are lesser member forces , and lesser reinforcement.

These are typically designed to provide acceptable collapse prevention

performance.

 To address the above mentioned issues, it is proposed to design Concrete

filled Double skin tube (CFDST)
Concrete filled Double skin tube (CFDST)

CFDST is a creative innovation of composite steel-concrete construction

and consists of two concentric steel tubes separated by concrete filler.

It optimally combines the benefits of traditional concrete filled tube (CFT)

and those of a sandwich form
Both inner and outer tubes satisfy the ductility requirements of AISC (2010)
Advantages of CFDST

lighter weight

higher bending stiffness

better cyclic performance

better fire resistance

More ductile

enhance energy absorption under seismic loads.

Objective

To study the utilization of Concrete filled Double skin tube to resist
shear in a seismic excitation and optimize its connection to the
columns for shear transfer.

To enable more rapid repair and provide lower repair cost.

Sanam Aghdamy et al (2015), EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON BEHAVIOUR OF CONCRETE

FILLED DOUBLE SKIN TUBE COLUMNS UNDER LATERAL IMPACT LOADING. 3rd
International Conference on Protective Structures (ICPS3)

This paper presents an experimental investigation on the lateral impact response of

axially loaded concrete filled double skin tube (CFDST) columns.

The main objectives of the current paper are to describe the innovative testing
procedure and provide some insight into the lateral impact behavior and failure of simply
supported axially pre-loaded CFDST columns.

The findings of this study will serve as a benchmark reference for future analysis and
design of CFDST columns
Literature Survey (Cont.,)

R. Imani et.al, Experimental Study on Post-Earthquake Fire Resistance of

Ductile Concrete-Filled Double-Skin Tube Columns J. Struct. Eng. ASCE 2015

Experimental studies were conducted to examine the behavior of concrete-filled

double-skin tube (CFDST) columns exposed to fire after being subjected to simulated
seismic loads.
The undamaged and damaged columns were then subjected to the same fire
tests in accordance with a standard temperature-time curve while sustaining an axial
load until the column failed due to global buckling. Local
buckling of the tubes was also observed in the specimens due to the thermal expansion
and separation from the concrete.
An additional quasi-static cyclic loading test was conducted on the specimen that had
been exposed to fire without any prior damage to investigate the behavior of the column
subjected to seismic loads after the fire test. Differences in behavior were modest,
except for a 5.7% drop in strength attributed to permanent degradation in material
properties due to the fire test.

Wei Li et al (2012) , Axial strength of concrete-filled double skin steel tubular (CFDST)
columns with preload on steel tubes Thin-Walled Structures

Concrete filled double skin steel tubular (CFDST) columns have some advantages when
compared to conventional concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) columns, such as lighter
self-weight and better cyclic performance.

This paper discusses the behaviour of axially loaded CFDST columns with preload
either on the outer tube alone or on both tubes. A general purpose finite element
analysis (FEA) model is developed to predict the behaviour of CFDST columns with the
steel tubes subjected to preload.

Formulas are proposed for calculating the ultimate strength of CFDST columns with
preload on steel tubes.
