Perspective on the Implementation of K-


12 program in University of Cebu

INTRODUCTION

According to Armin Luistro (2015)


that the K-12 program is the
additional 2 years of education in
high school.
 Department of Education Secretary, the implementation of K-12 program has
had its developments since 2010 including the improvements on the
inadequacy of facilities and materials.
 The K-12 program is beneficial as it prepares the country for ASEAN
Integration. An important pre-condition for the Philippines to integrate with
the other ASEAN nations is the K-12 program.
 However, Armin Luistro admitted that “The Philippines is having a bit of a
difficulty because there are things that we really are rushing and cramming
about which we should have done earlier” (cited in Geronimo, 2013).
 The purpose of this study is for the researchers to
know the students perspective on the
implementation of the K-12 program.
Consequently, the researchers decided to conduct
this study with Senior High School student in order
to find out their views, their opinions, their
thoughts, and their feelings regarding the
implementation of K-12 program.
Scope and Limitations

 This study focuses on the student’s perspective on the K-12


program and how it will affect the students in their
education. This study will be conducted in University of Cebu
Senior High School New Building. There would be 10 random
Senior High School respondents.
Significance of the Study

 The study will be conducted in order to find out the


perspective of the Grade 11 students Senior High School in
the University of Cebu.

 Students: The direct respondents of the output of this research are


the students.
 The Parents: This research also benefits the parents of the students
Grade 11 Senior High School of University of Cebu.
 The Teachers: The teachers will benefit in this study because the information
they get about the students perspective on K -12 program will make them more
driven and inspired in carrying out quality teaching for their students.
 The School: The outcome of the study will motivate the school to provide a
well-organized and relevant task with advanced and standardized curriculum to
respond the needs of the students in this challenging time.
 The Researchers: The outcome of the study will also beneficial
Definition of Terms:

 K12. It is the program implemented by the government that adds 2 more


years of education for high school.
 Implementation. The application of the K to 12 Program.
 Perspective. Views of students about the program.
 Respondents. The one who answered the interview Questionnaire.
 Age. Respondents profile.
 Gender. The female and male respondents.

 SO , The Advantages

 (Briones, 2017), said that the implementation of K to 12 is not propelled only


on the advice of the international community nor as required by the ASEAN,
but because the Filipinos should realize the rich advantage of the new
curriculum in making the youth more productive and competitive, not only
overseas but more so in their country.
The Disadvantages

 The K-12 program, or the Kindergarten and the 12 years of elementary and
secondary education, has been brought to attention sincere its first year of
Implementation. Critics say that its implementation could only worsen the
issue on education in the country. Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, a known critic
of the program, said that the country appears to be unprepared for K-12 due
to inadequacy in resources, tools, classroom, etc. (cited in Reyes, 2015).
 However, Armin Luistro (2013) admitted that “The Philippines is having a bit
of difficulty because there are things that we really are rushing and cramming
about which we should have done earlier” (cited in Geronimo, 2013). With
this, it is clear that the country is not ready for such integration and there is
much work that need.
Related Studies

 According to the study of Emy Lacorte, examined School Readiness for K-12
the school readiness in terms of curriculum adjustment was assessed by the
respondents to a great extent, as sustained. In terms of school plant and
facilities, the schools’ readiness was likewise measured to a great extent, as
confirmed. In terms of administration and management, the schools’
readiness in the implementation of K to 12 was also assessed by the
respondents to a great extent, as supported.
METHODOLOGY

Research Design
 . This study utilized a qualitative method and utilized a descriptive-
correlational design because this is based on a scenario that is happening in
the status quo. This also used phenomenological approach since it
distinguishes phenomena (the perception or appearances from the point of
view of human) from noumena (what things really are) (Willis, 2007).
Research Locale
 The study was conducted at the University of Cebu
(Senior High School Building) Founded by Atty. Agusto
W. Go in 1964. It offers programs and provides good
learning activities. Establishes vision, mission and core
values which is “ICARE” that stands for Innovation,
Camaraderie, Alignment, Respect, and Excellence.
Research Respondent

 Senior High School Students taking up STEM, COOKERY, and HUMSS at the
University of Cebu are the subject of the study. The researchers used random
sampling technique in choosing the respondents of their study.

Research Instruments
A research- made questionnaire was designed
by the researcher. It was used as the primary
data gathering instrument with focus on the
student’s perspective on the K-12 program.
Data Gathering Procedure

 The researchers conducted a visit in University of Cebu Senior High School


New Building to ask permission for the interview to be conducted. The
researchers first prepared a letter signed by our research teacher then have it
signed by the school principal. After the letter was signed, the researchers
conducted an on the spot interview with random respondents and will be
asked to answer 1 question with 2 categories.

Data Analysis Procedure


 The accomplished questionnaires were collected. Responses were noted and
tallied. The data were tabulated.

INTERPRETATON OF DATA
 Theme 1: Advantages of the K to 12 Program
 Subtheme 1: Develop their ability, skills and knowledge
 The curriculum and advanced facilities better learning and understanding.

 Subtheme 2: Will get a good and decent job after graduation


 They get a good training academically in this program.
 Subtheme 3: They will be more prepared for college education
 The Senior High Program and curriculum are equipped with topics & skills
similar to college.
Theme 2: Disadvantages of the K to 12
Program

 The number of years is lengthen and getting a job takes some time.
 Subthemes 2: Additional Expenses and Years
 The added two years in high school incurs a generous amount of expense on
the family of the respondents.
THEORY BACKGROUND

 John Dewey's curriculum theory


 John Dewey felt that the curriculum should ultimately produce students who
would be able to deal effectively with the modern world.

 Learning Theory
 In psychology and education, learning is commonly defined as a process that
brings together cognitive, emotional, and environmental influences and
experiences for acquiring, enhancing, or making changes in one's knowledge,
skills, values, and world views (Illeris, 2004; Ormrod, 1995).
 Instructional Theory
 Instructional theory is a discipline that focuses on how to structure material
for promoting the education of humans, particularly youth.
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION
AND RECOMMENDATION
 Summary of Findings
 This study aims to determine the students’ perspective on the implementation of K-
12 program.

 Findings
 The findings of this research endeavor are as follows:
 1. Of the ten (10) respondents, six is eighteen years old; and four is seventeen years old.
 2. Five (5) of the ten respondents expressed that the K to 12 program will develop and
enhance their skills and abilities; four of them said that they get to get a decent job after
graduation; and three claimed that this program will prepare them for college education.

 3. Based on the collected data, seven of the respondents said that the K to 12
Program incurs additional expense on their part; and six expressed that this
program delays their entrance to college.

 4. Both male and female respondents equally expressed that the K to 12


Program is more of a disadvantage than an advantage on their part as a
student and to their family for it takes time and entails a lot of expenses on
their part.
Conclusion
 This study was purposely made by the researchers to find out how the
Senior High Students of University of Cebu perceived the K to 12 Program
using qualitative method of gathering the data. The researchers arrived at
a conclusion that majority of students perceived the K to 12 Program is an
additional expense and delays them from finishing school thus, a waste of
time.
Recommendation
 Along the way of gathering data needed to arrive with the results the
researchers discovered the different perceptions of the Senior High Students
about the K to 12 Program. These are the following recommendations that the
researchers would like to propose:
 1. The school will conduct frequent awareness program about the significance
and relevance of K to 12 Program on quality education.
 2. The government, if possible increase the Voucher Program.
 3. The students will conduct self- awareness about K to 12 Program for better
understanding.
