1 Introduction
◇ Aeronautics materials (2xxx) are
difficult to weld

◇ Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is an
important solution for joining
aeronautics material

5
Advantages of
FSW
1. low distortion and shrinkage,
2. excellent mechanical properties in
tensile, fatigue and bend test,
3. no arc & no fume,
4. no filler needed,
5. weight reduction

6
The Mechanism of Friction
Stir Welding
1. Friction is caused by the
rotating tool
2. Heat generated by friction,
soften the metal
3. The soften material, stirred
together by the pin
4. Creating solid bonding region
which weld the join

parameters such as feed rate, tool geometry, rotational speed and pin inclination are
related to the mechanical properties (M. Aisanni, S. Gachi, F. Boubendir and Y.
Bankedda)
Tool geometry as in pin profiles such as threaded, squared and triangular determines
the quality of the weld because of their efficiency to transfer material from top to
bottom and vice versa (G. Padmanaban and V. Balasubramanian)
Taper ratio has shown to have a higher tensile strength compares to cylindrical (K.
Elangovan and V. Balasubramanian)

Conclusion

◇ Tool pin angle has also affected the

weld quality.
◇ Better result obtained for pin probe
angle 3o and 6o with respect to
metallurgical and mechanical
properties of the FSW
