ABSTRACT
With the rapid development in the wireless
communications, much effort has been devoted to reduce the
size of micro strip antennas. This uses a dielectric substrate of
high permittivity, Defected Microstrip Structure, Defected
Ground Structure(DGS) at the ground plane.
This project propose a low cost compact edge fed
rectangular patch antennas by way of the DGS. The proposed
two shapes i.e., is I and L DGS antennas operate at resonating of
C-Band.
The performance measures of DGS antennas going to be
stimulated in Ansoft HFSS Stimulation software.
Objective
• To design and stimulate Microstrip patch antenna
with defective ground structure

• To design a compact antenna for C-Band

applications

• A comparison of performance with standard

antenna parameters

Fringing effect
• The portion of EM waves that radiates into
space is known as fringing effect.

• How can we increase the fringing effect ?

1. Lower Er
2. Increase of h
3. Higher the width(w)
Effects of fringing
• Effective length increases by Ϫl

• Operating frequency 𝑓 = 𝑐/2𝑙√€𝑒𝑓𝑓

Defective Ground structure
• The compact geometrical slots embedded on
the ground plane of microwave circuits are
referred to as Defected Ground Structure
(DGS).

Methodology

• The software that we used for simulation is

Ansoft HFSS version 12. Starting with a
microstrip patch, various techniques have
been applied to meet frequency and size
requirements.

WEIGHT 9 grams
Advantages
• Easy to fabricate and printed on a circuit board
• Small size
• Low cost
• Less weight
• Liner and circular polarization can be easily
achieved.
• Feed lines and matching network can be easily
integrated
Applications
• Mobile and Satellite Communications
• RFID
• Global Positioning system
• Radar
• Telemedicine
• Missiles
Drawbacks
• Narrow band-width
• Low power handling capacity
• It excites surface waves
• It radiates in half plane only
• Size is large at lower frequency
• Difficult to achieve Polarization purity
