Respiratory and Circulatory Systems, Working with

other Organ Systems

Objective:

1. Explain how lungs work

2. Describe how the movement
of the diaphragm helps the air
go in and out of the lungs.
Vocabulary:
Inhale
- breath in, the diaphragm muscle
contracts.
exhale
- breath out, diaphragm muscles
relaxes.
Vocabulary:

Diaphragm
- a dome-shaped muscular partition
separating the thorax from the abdomen in
mammals.
It plays a major role in breathing , as its
contraction increases the volume of the
thorax and so inflates the lungs.
Have you experienced
being jam-packed in an
elevator?
What did you do?
Let's do activity 2.
Reporting
1. What does each
part of the
constructed lung
model represent?
2. What happens as
you pull down the
balloon at the bottom
of the model?
3. What happens
as you push up the
balloon?
4. How does the
movement of the
diaphragm causes the
air to go in and out of
the lungs?
5. What might
happen if you prick
the balloon?
