Effects of hacking - Russell

Generally, computer hacking refers to accessing someone's computer, or a similar device

such as a smartphone, without permission. If someone hacks an organization, that
individual can steal sensitive data such as documentation of business processes and
trade secrets or contact information for employees and customers. Hackers can also
damage data by erasing or changing the data, or by damaging the actual hardware. The
impact of hacking can also include legal liability, if someone else's data is stolen or a
company is unable to fulfill contracts because of hacking issues.
Social Use Of Hacking - Russell

Social hacking describes the act of attempting to manipulate outcomes of social

behaviour through orchestrated actions. The general function of social hacking is to gain
access to restricted information or to a physical space without proper permission. Most
often, social hacking attacks are achieved by impersonating an individual or group who is
directly or indirectly known to the victims or by representing an individual or group in a
position of authority.
How Hacking Affects The Economy - Russell

To understand how hacking benefits and harms the economy you need to know what a
white hat hacker is and a black hat hacker. A white hat hacker is someone who tests out
company’s security by trying to hacking into them in exchange for money. A black hat
hacker is someone who hacks into company’s and people’s personal electronics to steal
private information. Being a white hat hacker serves as a full time job and pays lots of
money. A black hat hacker can steal millions of dollars of information causing huge set
backs to the economy.
Statistics- Zach
● US budget for 2019 on cybersecurity is set
at $15 billion(Symantec)
● In 2018 60 million Americans were affected
by identity theft(Symantec)
● Third-party hosted app stores contain
99.9% of discovered mobile
malware(Symantec)
● In a 2018 survey done by Cira, a Canadian
company, 40% of respondents experienced
a cyber attack in the last 12 months
● In the Cira survey the number of people
affected in large businesses increased to
66%
● 37% of those people did not have an anti-
malware protection installed(Cira)
● More than one in five Canadian companies
were impacted by a cyber attack last year
according to a Statistics Canada survey
Our Opinion On The Issue- Zach

Our opinion on the issue is that most people think they’re protected from cyber crimes,
or they think that it isn’t a serious issue and it’d never happen to them, when in reality, it
does happen to people and chances are you don’t even have the proper software
installed to defend yourself against it. Like we said before 1 in 5 Canadian companies are
affected by cyber attacks which is already a pretty high number and with all the
advancements in technology and smaller businesses not defending themselves properly,
that number will go up. 37% of the people in the CIRA survey didn’t even have anti-
malware protection installed, which is ridiculous and leaves you completely vulnerable.
Overall, we think that in the future, Canadians need to update their personal cyber
security, as well as businesses as a whole, and that people need to start taking this
seriously or else for all you know, it could be your credit card getting stolen or your
information being sold.
