ROLL NO.-2017-129 WHAT IS SCHMITT TRIGGER AND ITS USE A Schmitt trigger circuit is also called a regenerative comparator circuit. The circuit is designed with a positive feedback and hence will have a regenerative action which will make the output switch levels. It is called a ‘trigger’ circuit as the output retains its value until the input changes sufficiently to trigger a change.
Using opamp, there can be two types of Schmitt Triggers i.e. Inverting and Non- Inverting Scmitt Triggers.
Schmitt trigger devices are typically used in signal conditioning applications to
remove noise from signals.
They are also used in closed loop negative feedback configurations to implement
relaxation oscillators, used in function generators and switching power supplies. 2 ▰ WORKING Schmitt trigger, also known as ‘hysteresis comparator’. Thus, it has two threshold voltages : Upper Threeshold Voltage(Vut)-For Low to High Transitions and Lower Threshold Voltage (Vlt)-For High to Low Transitions. ▰ The working of the Schmitt Trigger can be understood from its Transfer Characteristic Curve also called the Hysteresis Curve. If the input signal is less than the Upper Threshold Voltage of the Schmitt Trigger, the output will be low. When the input signal crosses the Vut then the output will be high and it will remain high even if it crosses the upper threshold level. When the input signal reaches below the Vlt, the output will switch to low and will remain low even if the input signal is less than Vlt. This is the characteristic curve of Non-Inverting type Schmitt Trigger as the output becomes high when the input crosses the Vut and becomes low when it crosses the Vlt. The Hysteresis is given by Vut-Vlt. ▰ The vice-versa happens for the Inverting Schmitt Trigger. ▰ This dual threshold action is called hysteresis and implies that the Schmitt trigger possesses memory and can act as a bistable multivibrator (latch or flip-flop)
