BROAD AREA OF PROJECT WORK
 Microstrip patch antennas are widely used in
wireless and mobilecommunication systems because of
their advantages, such as low profile,light weight, and
ease of fabrication.

The objective was to design and simulate Microstrip

patch antenna that resonates at 2.4 GHz in Advanced
Design System.

Using ADS for designing of Patch Antenna with

different Substrate height, we analyzed the effect on
Gain & Directivity.
INTRODUCTION
 Microstrip patch antenna consists of a radiating
patch on one side of a dielectric substrate which has a
ground plane on the other side.
 The patch is generally made of conducting material
such as copper or gold and can take any possible
shape. The radiating patch and the feed lines are
usually photo etched on the dielectric substrate.

ADS SOFTWARE
 Advanced design system is an electronic design
automation software system produced by agilent
technologies.
 Agilent ADS supports every step of the design
process—schematic capture, layout, frequency-
domain and time-domain circuit simulation, and
electromagnetic field simulation—allowing the
engineer to fully characterize and optimize an
design without changing tools.
KEY FEATURES OF ADS
 Complete schematic capture and layout
environment.
 Innovative and industry leading circuit and
system simulators.
 Up-to-date Wireless Libraries enable design and
verification of the latest emerging wireless
standards.
 Direct, native access to 3D planar and full 3D
EM field solvers.
PATCH ANTENNA SPECIFICATIONS
The parameter that are decided by the default in order to
continue to the design process are :-

 Dielectric substrate (εr) = 3.4

 Velocity of Light=3*108 m/s

 Operating frequency (f) =2.4GHz

 Length of the patch = 33.4 mm

 Width of the patch = 42.1mm

 Thickness of ground plane=35μm

 Feeding method=Transmission line method

 Name of Substrate material=Roger Corps(R04003C)

 Height of substrate (h) =1.588 mm

MATLAB CODING
 fo=input('Enter frequency of operation (fo) in Hz');
 Er=input('Enter Dielectric constant (Er)');

 h=input('Enter height of substrate (h) in m');

 W=(3*10^8)/(2*fo*sqrt((Er+1)/2))

 Eref=(Er+1)/2+((Er-1)/2)/(sqrt(1+12*h/W))

 Lef=(3*10^8)/(2*fo*sqrt(Eref)) ;

 dL=((0.412*h)*(Eref+0.3)*(W/h+0.264))/((Eref-
0.258)*(W/h+0.8)) ;
 L=Lef-2*dL ;

 Lg=6*h+L ;

 Wg=6*h+W;

DESIGN STEPS
Steps for simulation using ADS

Step1: Open ADS window and create a new project.

Step2: Then Open the schematic window.

Step3: Select and drag the required component on schematic

window.

Step4: Enter the parameters values of the component by double

click on the component and do the calculations using line calc.

Step5: Go to simulate s-parameters and drag the s-parameters to

the schematics window.

Step6: Double click the s-parameter and define the initial and
final frequency and also step size.
Steps for simulation using ADS continues...

Step7: Select the 50ohm port terminal and terminate the ports.

Step8: Click on the simulation icon : s-parameter response will be

obtained.

Step9: To generate layout select: generate layout option from the

schematic window.

Step10: Go to Momentum: create / modify substrate value as per

design requirement.

Step11: For simulation on layout window click on s-parameter

simulation : give frequency , initial value , final value , step size.

Step12: Final output will be generated through momentum.

MICROSTRIP LINE CALCULATION IN ADS
To achieve a low profile and small size patch antenna, Transmission line feed
method is employed. The dimension can be calculated by using LineCalc tool
in ADS.
SUBSTRATE CREATION IN ADS
We can define appropriate substrate values in
Momentum tool Create/modify Substrate.

ADVANTAGES OF PATCH ANTENNA
 Light weight and low volume.
 Low fabrication cost, hence can be manufactured in
large quantities.
 Low profile planar structure which can be easily
made.
 Supports both, linear as well as circular
polarization.
 Capable of dual and triple frequency operations.
APPLICATIONS OF PROJECT WORK
 Microstrip patch antennas are increasing in popularity for
use in wireless applications due to their low-profile structure.

 Patch antennas find a variety of application starting from

military to commercial, because of there ease of design and
fabrication.

 In telecommunication, there are several types of microstrip

antennas (also known as printed antenna) the most common
of which is the microstrip patch antenna or patch antenna.
CONCLUSION
 By varying the height of substrate it can be seen that as the
height of the substrate increases, the gain in dB decreases in
backward direction. Hence, the expected objective was
achieved that radiation of antenna is away from the user.
 In conclusion, we have simulated Patch Antenna on ADS
software but still some disadvantages can be
minimised.Microstrip patch antenna can be designed for each
application and particular merits can be compared with
conventional antenna.
