THE IMPLICATIONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

AND TECHNOLOGY ON SOCIETY AND

CULTURE
A Case study by a student from University Sains Malaysia.
INTRODUCTION:

• From the past few years, technology has evolved rapidly this has caused few big
changes in human lives: not only in their religious believes but also their thoughts
and their life styles.
• Social Media has played its major role to impose the usage of technology in daily
lives of human beings.
• This has influenced the way human beings interact with other people and spent their
lives.
WHAT DOES THE AUTHOR SAYS IN THE
STUDY?
• Abstract:
• Social media continues to play an important role in defining how many of us communicate
and interact today. Sites such as Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram
are some of the well-known social networking sites whose primary objective is to
facilitate such diverse forms of communication and interaction. Also, with the advent of
social media, we are now able to create and share expressive and communicative contents
at a pace the world has never seen before. Such sites have undoubtedly eased
mobilization and resources, thus revolutionizing how we express, interact and
communicate with one another for good. This manuscript aims to assess its both positive
and negative implications on society
SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION IN A POSITIVE
WAY
• This has allowed its users to access information on their finger tips.
• This has allowed consumers to communicate their message more effectively.
• This has transformed the world into a Global Village.
• This has allowed humans to make their lives easier.
• For example: Now, Students do not have to look for books in libraries but instead,
they can look up for them on their smart phones. People do not have to send letters to
their loved ones, and wait ages for their replies, yet, they can contact them in very
simple and easiest ways.
HOW DO THE IMPLICATIONS EFFECT OUR
THOUGHTS?
• Lets, take the example of internet and the knowledge being given to us. We can take the note on the religious
beliefs that most of the people of the same religion have different perceptions about their religion. In most cases,
many people from the same religion show up and challenge the teachings of their elders.

• Take the example of radicalized jihadist youth in the West. In many cases the Internet has been represented as a
powerful technology that incites young Muslims to become radicalized. Often the term "sudden radicalization” is
used to highlight the power of social media to swiftly convert otherwise confused young Muslims into hardened
extremist jihadists. Yet there is considerable evidence to suggest that young Muslims who go online to visit
jihadist websites have gone through a process of self-radicalization.

• Another Example is of women empowerment, in some cases, the extremist religious groups do not allow their
people to empower their women, yet, with the invent of social media and the access of smart phones, awareness
has vastly spread and people have started to work on their women empowerment.
THIS IS RELATED TO THE CONCEPT OF
“ETHNOCENTRISM”
• What is Ethnocentrism?
• Ethnocentrism is the act of judging another culture based on preconceptions that are
found in the values and standards of one's own culture – especially regarding
language, behavior, customs, and religion. These aspects or categories are
distinctions that define each ethnicity's unique cultural identity
DIFFERENT PEOPLE SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLY ON THE
BASIS OF KNOWLEDGE THAT THEIR MID IS PROGRAMMED
WITH.
REDUNDANCY:

• Social media and Technology has also allowed the news to spread in redundant
manner. Sharing the amount of news on a big scale, before the implications of social
media was a challenging task. Yet, after social media took over our lives, it mostly
gave us some redundant statements that changed the thought of we, people.
• In some cases, this is believed to be a positive effect on human psychology, and in
some cases, this has programmed our minds to believe certain things that the society
wants to implement on our minds.
WE BELIEVE WHAT WE HEAR THE MOST.
