Permit to work
What is it?
What does it do?
How CHAMPS Permits can help?
What is a PTW system?
It is the formalization of the procedures used to control certain
types of potentially hazardous work. It is also a means of
communication between permit issuers, plant supervisors,
operators and those who carry out work. The end goal is to
consider all possible hazards and plan accordingly.
OSHA 29 CFR (Code of Federal Regulation)
PART 1910 & PART 1926
• Contains standards for permit-
required conditions
• Outlines the minimum
• Supports job safety analysis. Osha.gov / Accessed 01-09-17

• Confined spaces
• Two standards (Construction & General Industry) • State permit requirements vary
• Is the only employer issued permit that OSHA
requires
Other common permits
• Hot work
• Work at heights
• Excavation
• Scaffolding
• Hazardous material
• Asbestos, Lead, etc OSHA has standards for
• Hoisting all of these topics
• Diving
• Radiation
• Electrified systems
• Fire hazard
What does it do?
Trains
• Personnel involved should understand the procedures involved in the PTW system
including work suspension, shift changes etc.
• Personnel using devices and safety equipment should be trained in the use of those
devices. Ex. harness, respirator etc.
Identifies
• All potential hazards related to work to be performed at a specific location and time.
• PPE, emergency plans, related permits, isolations, MSDS, monitoring devices and
calibration dates.
Records
• All of the above data in a centralized document that can be displayed and shared with
a work party and other need to know personnel.
• The monitoring of conditions throughout the work process.
• Period of permit validity
• Authorization signatures
• Permit close out
How CHAMPS Permits can help…

CHAMPS records all of this and

provides organization and the
ability to create relationships
between your permits, assets and
the work documents effected by
them.
Because, if you didn’t document it…

It didn’t happen!
• It didn’t happen!
