ANTIBIOTICS
DEFINITION
What is an Antibiotic?

The medicine that inhibits the growth of (Bacteriostatic) or destroys

(Bactericidal) microorganisms mainly bacteria.

What is the use of Antibiotic?

Used to treat wide variety of infections or diseases caused by

microorganisms mainly bactiria.

How the Antibiotics are produced?

1.Biosynthesis - Produced by some microorganisms (Bacteria/Moulds)

during their growth as metabolites (eg. Penicillin).
2. Semi-Biosynthesis - Chemical compounds isolated from natural
resources used as starting material for production of Antibiotics (eg.
Ampicillin).
3. Chemical synthesis/Total synthesis - Produced by purposeful execution
of one or more named reactions (eg. Chloramphenicol) .
CLASSIFICATION OF ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS
1.ON CHEMICAL STRUCTURE: 6 groups of antibiotics

1) Beta-lactum antibiotics (contains Beta- lactum ring in their molecular structure): Penicilllins,
Cephalosporins, etc.
2) Tetracyclines: Oxytetracyclines, Doxycyclines etc.
3) Aminoglycosides : Streptomycin, Gentamicin, Neomycin, etc.
4) Quinolones: Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin, etc.
5) Macrolide: Erythromycin, Azithromycin etc.
6) Sulfonamides: Sulfadiazine, Sulfamethoxazole sulfadimidin etc.

2. ON MECHANISM OF ACTION: 5 groups

1) Inhibit cell wall synthesis: Penicillin, Cephalosporin, etc.

2) Affecting permiability of cell Membrane: Polymixins, Nystatin and Amphotericin.
3) Inhibiting Prtotein synthesis affecting ribosomes: Chloramphenicol, Tetracyclines, Aminoglycosides,
erythromycin.
4) Affecting Nucleic Acid Metabolism: Rifampcin, Nalidixic Acid.
5) Affecting Metabolic Process in Bacteria: Sulphonamide, Trimithoprim, Amino salicylic Acid
3. SPECTRUM OF ACTIVITY:

Narrow spectrum Broad spectrum

Penicillin G Tetracyclines
Streptomycin Chloramphenicols

4. DEPENDING UPON THE EFFECT:

Bacteriostatic Bactericidal
Tetracyclines Pencillin
Cloramphenicol, etc. Cephalosporins, etc.
