Introduction to waste

• Waste
Waste is nothing but unwanted material created from our day to day activities. It is
generated from our room, house, office etc.
Disposal of waste in the open area may have hazardous impacts on the
environment.

• Wet Waste
Wet waste (Biodegradable) constitutes wasted food, vegetable and fruit peels,
paper, eggs, coconut shells, hair, dust, fallen leaves etc.

• Dry waste
Dry waste (Non- biodegradable) constitutes plastic, glass, broken toys, MS material
etc.
Waste definition and classification
• Any material which is not needed by producer, owner or processor.
Classification of waste
• Domestic Waste
• Factory Waste
• E Waste
• Construction Waste
• Agriculture Waste
• Food processing Waste
• Bio medical Waste
• Nuclear Waste

Need for solid waste management

Increase in Population has Resulted in

•Increased Waste Generation

•No Space for Waste dumping

•Decrease in Health & Hygiene

•Unawareness amongst various stake holders of the system.

•Improper management
Waste collection in India

By Primarily by the city municipality

 Collection of waste product e.g. biodegradable, glasses ,polybags, papers,
etc.
 Dumps these wastes to the city outskirts

By Local raddiwala /Rag pickers

 Collecting Plastic bottles
 Collecting glass bottles
 Collecting paper for recycling
Source of Waste Generator

 Hotels

 Temples

 Clubs & Resorts

 Industrial Canteen

 Institutional Canteen

 Institutional Campus

 Building & society

Aim

• Solid waste management can be made eco-friendly using technique like

Vermicomposting and bio waste converter machine
Vermicomposting & Bio-composting
1) Vermicomposting:
• Organic waste is bio-degradable waste and can be processed in the
presence of oxygen by composting or in the absence of oxygen using
anaerobic digestion.
• Both methods produce a soil conditioner, which when prepared correctly
can also be used as valuable source of nutrient in urban agriculture.
2) Bio composting through Bio Waste Converter Machine:
• Organic waste converter homogenizes organic waste with appropriate
additives and bio culture.
• The output from device is uniformed coloured coarse powder in appearance
and is without foul smell.

Process Description

All waste to be collected with pre- segregation. i.e. All dry waste (non bio
degradable waste) should be removed from the garbage) and wet waste
(Biodegradable waste) should be brought at compost site. This wet waste
will be treated with BWC machine by the operator. In this method ready
manure will be obtained within 10-15 days. The treated waste will be kept
for curing process for 10-12 days and will be packed in polythene bags. All
manure generated will be given to you in packed plastic bags.
Flow chart of the process
Operating Details

• Large volumes of food waste from pre-cooking, meal leftovers are dumped
into community bins, which are responsible for foul odour & health hazards.
Bio Waste Converter homogenizes Bio waste with appropriate additive & bio
culture. The output from the device is a uniform colored coarse powder which
is odourless - thus, good quality Bio manure is ready in two weeks of curing
period

Benefits of Bio waste converters

• Large quantity of solid waste is converted to fertilizer in a very short period

• Fertilizers can be sold as compost to farmers, or used for gardening
• Machine requires less space and the efficiency is high
• Manpower and maintenance is very less
Benefits of Bio waste converters
Vermicomposting
• Vermicomposting is the simple
biotechnological process of
composting organic waste into
compost with the help of
earthworms
• It is altogether a natural system
in which earthworms plays their
major role in degradation of
organic waste.
Process of Vermicomposting

1) Take perforated plastic bean of height 1 feet.

2) Layers are laid down in it as follows
1st layer, 3cm thick layer of broken bricks or pebbles followed by coarse
sand to ensure proper drainage.
2nd layer, 4 cm thick layer of loamy soil.
3rd layer, 3cm thick layer of Kitchen waste.
4th layer, 3cm thick loamy soil.
5th layer, 3cm of thick layer of kitchen waste.

3) Watering and monitoring should be done everyday.

4) Garbage must be turned thrice a week to release heat and gases to avoid stinking.
5) Monitoring of pH ,and temperature should be done.
6) After 1 -2 months garbage is changed into soft, earthy dark brown compost.
