INTRODUCTION
• MCCB is a device which is assembled as an integral
inner supporting and enclosed housing of insulating
material for making ,carrying and breaking current
under normal circuit conditions and also making
carrying for a specified time and breaking current under
overload and short circuit conditions.
• MCCB are designed to provide protection to low
voltage distribution system.
COMPONENTS
MCCB PROVIDES FOLLOWING PROTECTIONS
• Overload protection-through bimetal
• Short circuit protection-through electromagnet
• Under voltage protection-through U/V release
FEATURES OF MCCB

• MCCB are available upto 1600 A with breaking

capacity upto 70 kA.
• It has mechanical interlocking.
• Two types of releases are used in MCCB which are
thermomagnetic and digital release
FEATURES OF MCCB
• All the parts of circuit breaker are enclosed in the
moulded housing which is made of heat resistance
insulating material.
• All releases operate on a common trip bar so that all
the phases are disconnected even when a fault occurs
at only one of them thus eliminates the possibility of
single phasing.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES OF MCCB
• It provides trip alarm
• Shunt release
• Under voltage release
• Remote operator
• Key locking
• Earth fault release
OPERATION
• The circuit breaker comprises of fixed and movable
contacts.
• Operating mechanism is quick make ,quick break and trip
free
• The mechanism is so designed that there is no arcing on
the current carrying parts of the contacts.
• Contacts are silver alloy which have long electrical life.
• Current flows from moving contacts to heating element.
• During overload current the bimetal which is fixed to the
heating element gets deflected.
• When short circuit occurs the magnet is energized due to
the magnetic force formed due to high rush of current
and the release assembly is energized.
• Both these operations result in opening the contacts and
breaking of circuit.
• Breaker has to be reset before switching it on again.
TYPES OF MCCB
MCCB are broadly classified into three categories
• Standard or normal type
• High breaking capacity
• Extra high breaking capacity
APPLICATIONS OF MCCB
• Distribution feeders
• Transformers
• DG (diesel generating) sets
• DC loads
• UPS
• Motors
ADVANTAGES OF MCCB
• Practically no maintenance is required.
• It avoids single phasing when fault in one phase only.
• These can be tested at sight.
• These have separate indication in case of trip
